Overview
Edition Winkler-Hermaden is an Austrian publishing house (Verlag) based in Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel in Lower Austria. It was founded at the beginning of 2009 in Schleinbach in the Weinviertel by the publisher Ulrich Winkler-Hermaden, who had already been working with books since 1982 and had led the Archiv Verlag GmbH in Austria from 1987 to 2008. The house is owner-managed and remains a small, independent publisher. The programme focuses on Austrian culture and history, with particular emphasis on the history of Vienna, the federal province of Lower Austria and the Weinviertel region, as well as railway history, the history of the Austrian federal provinces and Austrian literature. The publisher is known for richly illustrated, high-quality books at accessible prices, and it has built a distinctive niche with Leporellos (concertina-folded illustrated works) and limited collector's editions featuring fine binding materials, gold embossing and gilded edges. Its Leporello range includes large-format city works on Vienna and Linz, the very long Kaiser-Leporellos on Austrian rulers and Roman emperors, and small-format editions on songbirds, butterflies and beetles and insects. Reprints of historical works and facsimile editions of important historical view-books, such as those by Georg Matthäus Vischer and Matthäus Merian, also form part of the list. The publisher's catalogue is organised into series and thematic categories, including Geschichte Wiens (History of Vienna), Eisenbahn (Railways), Weinviertel, Niederösterreich and Militärgeschichte. Titles such as "Wien und seine Bahnhöfe", "Der Praterstern", "Wien und seine Bahnen", "Weinviertler Kellerleben", "Verschwundene Eisenbahnen im Weinviertel", "Wien. Eine Stadt verändert sich", "Das Ybbstal" and "Faszination EISZEIT" illustrate the mix of local history, urban history and railway history that defines the programme. The publisher states that the Weinviertel region is a particular focus, with a large number of titles, and military history is another significant strand. Authors who have published with Edition Winkler-Hermaden include Peter Autengruber, Beppo Beyerl, Ernst Bezemek, Walter Blasi, Christian Jostmann, Andreas Pittler, Martin Pollack and Gerhard Zeillinger. The house also maintains a blog in which its publisher and authors document walks, encounters and reflections connected to the Weinviertel and to cultural topics. In 2018 Ulrich Winkler-Hermaden received the Grand Decoration of Honour of the Province of Lower Austria (Großes Ehrenzeichen des Landes Niederösterreich) for his work as a publisher focusing on popular history themes and high-quality books, and for making regional details of Lower Austrian history accessible to a broad audience. The publishing house is active today, selling through its own website and book trade channels, with new titles and reissues appearing regularly.
History
Edition Winkler-Hermaden was founded at the beginning of 2009 in Schleinbach in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria by Ulrich Winkler-Hermaden, who launched the publishing house on 9 January 2009. Its founder had been involved in book publishing since 1982, with a focus on historical works. From 1982 to 1987 he worked at the Böhlau Verlag, and from 1987 to 2008 he served as publishing manager and later managing director of the Archiv Verlag GmbH in Austria, a subsidiary of the Archiv Verlag in Braunschweig. In that role he published loose-leaf collector's works covering all Austrian federal provinces and also brought out pictorial documentation in the field of sport. The new publishing house was established as an owner-managed business dedicated to illustrated history works in attractive formats at favourable prices. Its programme concentrated from the outset on Austrian culture and history, with the history of Vienna, Lower Austria and the Weinviertel as central themes, alongside railway history, the history of the Austrian federal provinces and Austrian literature. Reprints of historical works and facsimile editions of important historical view-books, including those by Georg Matthäus Vischer and Matthäus Merian, became part of the list. Over the years the publisher developed a distinctive profile through special formats. It produced Leporellos, of which nine different editions had been realised by the time of its own account, ranging from large-format works on Vienna and Linz to small-format editions on songbirds, butterflies and beetles and insects. The Kaiser-Leporellos on the rulers of Austria and the Roman emperors, each 4.65 metres long, became particular showpieces. Collector's editions produced in very small print runs, featuring fine binding materials, gold embossing and usually three-sided gilded edges, formed another specialty. The publisher also issued a number of book series and maintained a strong focus on the Weinviertel region, with a large number of titles, as well as on military history. By the late 2010s the publishing house had become a recognised, if young, presence in the Austrian book market. A trade journal noted that despite its recent founding in 2009, the professional presentation of its website and catalogue, the quality and sometimes splendid production of its books, and its extensive multi-series programme made it appear as though it had been on the market forever. In 2018 Ulrich Winkler-Hermaden was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour of the Province of Lower Austria for his work as a publisher with a programme focus on popular history themes and high-quality books, and for making interesting regional details of Lower Austrian history accessible to a broad public and supporting Lower Austrian authors. The publishing house has continued to operate from the Weinviertel, later based in Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel. It publishes new titles and reissues, maintains a blog in which the publisher and authors document walks and cultural encounters, and sells its books through its own website and the book trade. Authors who have published with the house include Peter Autengruber, Beppo Beyerl, Ernst Bezemek, Walter Blasi, Christian Jostmann, Andreas Pittler, Martin Pollack and Gerhard Zeillinger.
