Overview
Éditions de la Différence is a French publishing house founded in 1976 by Joaquim Vital, philosopher Marcel Paquet, and writer and art historian Patrick Waldberg, joined the same year by Colette Lambrichs. The company is based in Paris and operates as an independent publisher (à compte d'éditeur). It publishes French and foreign literature, poetry, essays, and art books, with a catalogue that at its peak included over 2,000 titles by 350 artists and 960 authors. The publisher is particularly noted for its poetry collections, such as 'Orphée' (bilingual pocket poetry, launched in 1989 and awarded the Prix Diderot-Universalis in 1991), and for its commitment to Portuguese literature, as well as works from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Maghreb. The house has faced significant financial difficulties, including a judicial liquidation in 2017 that was annulled in 2019, allowing it to resume activity. Subsequent management changes and internal conflicts led to another liquidation in 2023. Despite these challenges, Éditions de la Différence remains a notable name in French independent publishing, recognized for its literary and artistic quality.
History
Éditions de la Différence was founded in 1976 by Joaquim Vital, philosopher Marcel Paquet, and writer and art historian Patrick Waldberg, with Colette Lambrichs joining the same year. The publishing house quickly established itself as a significant independent publisher in France, known for its eclectic and high-quality catalogue. In 1987, it began publishing complete works of classical and contemporary authors, including Homer, Virgil, Dante, Pindar, Fernando Pessoa, and many others. Under Joaquim Vital's leadership, the publisher became particularly noted for promoting Portuguese literature, as well as works from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Maghreb. Poetry held a central place, especially after the launch of the 'Orphée' collection in 1989, which was awarded the Prix Diderot-Universalis in 1991. The collection was interrupted in 1998 for economic reasons but revived on 24 May 2012. The 'Minos' collection, created in 2002, reissued inaccessible works, many from the house's own backlist. In 2011, after the death of Joaquim Vital, Claude Mineraud became president and Colette Lambrichs director general. The company restructured, transforming from an SARL to an SAS with a capital of 1,393,775 euros, and from 1 January 2012, it established its own distribution team for France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. It had 19 employees in 2012. However, the publisher faced severe financial difficulties and was placed in judicial liquidation on 20 June 2017. On 12 February 2019, the Paris Commercial Court annulled the liquidation, allowing the company to resume operations. Jean-Pierre Archenoult became president on 10 January 2020, and the opening of the first bookstore was announced for September 2020 in Paris. Ariana Saenz Espinoza was appointed literary director on 5 July 2021, serving until 20 November 2021. On 22 November 2021, Soufiane Bensabra was appointed president. Management difficulties and internal conflict led to another judicial liquidation on 26 May 2023. Despite these challenges, the publisher's legacy includes a catalogue of over 2,000 titles and a reputation for literary and artistic excellence.
