Overview
Editora Paka-Tatu is a Brazilian publishing house headquartered in Belém, in the state of Pará. It was founded in June 2000 by three university professors: Armando Alves Filho, José Alves de Souza Júnior and José Maia Bezerra Neto. The name comes from a regional children's word game — "paca tatu cotia não" — with the "c" in "paca" replaced by a "k" to give the brand a more distinctive look. The logo was designed by Cláudio Serra and Antônio Carlos Gomes. The publisher's catalogue focuses on Amazonian themes, regional history, academic research and educational works. Its first title, published in its founding year, was "Belém: riquezas produzindo a Belle Époque" by Professor Maria de Nazaré Sarges of the Federal University of Pará. Over the years Paka-Tatu has built a network of reviewers, designers, illustrators, translators and librarians, and has signed contracts and partnerships to produce quality books. Paka-Tatu sells through its own website and through Amazon, and ships orders via Correios (the Brazilian postal service), offering Impresso Registrado, PAC and Sedex options. Its list includes academic studies, regional literature, children's books, comics and reference works. Among the titles featured on its site are "Migrações e diásporas em múltiplos espaços", "Tuíra – um menino da Amazônia", "Cheiro, gosto, feitiço", "O perdão da leitura", "Lembrança das águas", "O Calendário Sazonal dos Frutos Amazônicos", "Frutos nativos da Amazônia", "Vida de Camarão", "Esse rio é minha rua", "Poemas do Guarda-Chuva e outras cenas da cidade", "Diário de uma desconhecida", "Memorial da Cabanagem", "Amazônia: as várzeas e as novas dialéticas", "TELEPATIA" (a comic), "Compreendendo seu filho", "Berlinda: Asas para o fim do mundo", "Atlas de Enfermidades de Bovinos / Atlas of Cattle Diseases", "Estudos Amazônicos: Ensino Fundamental (6º ao 9º ano)", "Feiras de Marabá" and "Anotações sobre 'O Rebelde' de Inglês de Sousa". The publisher also maintains a YouTube channel and a blog. In 2018 it celebrated 18 years of activity, describing its mission as transforming ideas into books and bringing academic and private-shelf texts to a wider public. It remains an active independent publisher in northern Brazil.
History
Editora Paka-Tatu was founded in June 2000 in Belém, Pará, by three professors: Armando Alves Filho, José Alves de Souza Júnior and José Maia Bezerra Neto. Armando Alves Filho retired in the same year, while the other two continued to teach at the Federal University of Pará. The name was inspired by a traditional children's game in which adults asked children to repeat "paca tatu cotia não"; the children would immediately repeat the forbidden part, "cotia não". The founders found the joke amusing and regionally colourful, and replaced the "c" in "paca" with a "k" to give the name more flair. The logo was created by Cláudio Serra and Antônio Carlos Gomes, who also designed the first books. In its founding year, Professor Maria de Nazaré Sarges of the Federal University of Pará entrusted the publisher with the edition of her book "Belém: riquezas produzindo a Belle Époque", which became the first title under the Paka-Tatu imprint. Over the years the publisher built a team of reviewers, designers, illustrators, translators and librarians, and signed contracts and partnerships to produce quality books. By 2018 the house was celebrating 18 years of activity, describing its work as transforming ideas into books and helping to bring academic and private-shelf texts to a wider public. Its catalogue has grown to include Amazonian studies, regional history, literature, children's books, comics and reference works. The publisher sells through its own website and through Amazon, and ships via Correios. It also maintains a YouTube channel and a blog, and continues to release new titles and reissues.
