Overview

Edizioni Bastogi, today operating as Bastogi Libri (formerly Bastogi Editrice Italiana), is an Italian publishing house headquartered in Rome. Its lineage reaches back to the historic Ugo Bastogi Editore of Livorno, a publisher and bookseller known for religious, philosophical and esoteric titles, and to the Edizioni Argileto of Rome. The modern company was formally established in 1987 by Angelo Manuali, who had earlier taken over the catalogue, imprint and rights of the Bastogi publishing activity. The house has long been associated with niche, culturally oriented publishing. Under Ugo Bastogi, the catalogue focused on religious, philosophical and esoteric subjects, and from 1976 the firm also issued a quarterly periodical, La Canaviglia. The Bastogi bookshop in Livorno became a meeting point for scholars and bibliophiles, including figures such as Giovanni Spadolini and Gianfranco Merli. In 1978 Ugo Bastogi entrusted Angelo Manuali with the direction of a poetry and literary criticism series; the following year Bastogi concentrated on the Livorno bookshop and local-history texts, while Manuali moved the publishing operation to Foggia, acquiring the catalogue, imprint and rights and releasing new titles in literature, music, sport and local culture, working alongside his daughter Roberta Manuali. In 2013 the publishing house was renewed and rebranded as Bastogi Libri, under the leadership of Roberta Manuali, and relocated to Rome while retaining its earlier catalogue. The company remains a privately held Italian publisher, with its official web presence at bastogilibri.it. Its identity is that of a small, independent, culturally focused Italian editore rather than a mass-market trade publisher, and its backlist reflects decades of engagement with poetry, literary criticism, local history, music, sport and esoteric traditions.

History

The publishing tradition behind Edizioni Bastogi originates with Ugo Bastogi Editore of Livorno, a house whose publications dealt with religious, philosophical and esoteric themes. From 1976 the firm also published a quarterly periodical called La Canaviglia, conceived and supported by Bastogi himself. The Bastogi bookshop in Livorno became a gathering place for scholars and bibliophiles, among them Giovanni Spadolini and Gianfranco Merli. In 1978 Ugo Bastogi entrusted Angelo Manuali with the direction of a poetry and literary criticism series. At the beginning of the following year, Bastogi decided to devote himself exclusively to the Livorno bookshop and to local-history texts. Angelo Manuali then transferred the publishing activity to Foggia, having acquired the catalogue, the imprint and the rights, and published new titles in literature, music, sport and local culture, working alongside his daughter Roberta Manuali. The modern company, Edizioni Bastogi, was founded by Angelo Manuali in 1987, emerging from the earlier Edizioni Bastogi and, in turn, from the merger of the older Ugo Bastogi Editore of Livorno and Edizioni Argileto of Rome. It was headquartered in Rome. In 2013 the publishing house renewed itself, changing its name to Bastogi Libri under the leadership of Roberta Manuali and moving to Rome, while keeping its previous catalogue. The house has thus passed through several identities — Ugo Bastogi Editore, Edizioni Bastogi, Bastogi Editrice Italiana and Bastogi Libri — each retaining a culturally oriented, niche publishing profile.
