Overview
Effo P/F is a Faroese oil and energy company headquartered in Tórshavn. Its name derives from the letters FO, the international abbreviation for the Faroe Islands and the abbreviation of Føroya Orkufelag (Faroese Energy Company). The company traces its roots to the early 20th-century oil trading of the Haraldsen brothers in Tórshavn, and over the decades it operated under the international brands Esso and Statoil before becoming locally owned and rebranded as Effo in 2007. Today Effo supplies motor oils and fuels to private and business customers, serves Faroese and foreign ships, aircraft, companies, and public institutions, and runs a nationwide network of filling stations. At its stations it also offers food under the name "Fast." The company employs around 200 people. Beyond conventional fuels, Effo markets green energy solutions, including geothermal, air-to-water, and ventilation heat pumps, as well as a heating service that monitors and maintains oil-fired and heat-pump systems. It also provides an Effo app and automatic oil refilling with price guarantees. Effo is a private Faroese company and remains a central energy supplier in the islands.
History
Effo's history begins in the early 20th century with the Haraldsen brothers in Tórshavn, known as the "Treppenbrüder," who started importing and selling oil together. Oil was imported in wooden barrels, and the first depot was located in Kollafjørður. One of the brothers, Harald Haraldsen, founded a representation of the Danish company Det Danske Petroleums Aktieselskab (DDPA) in 1918. The first oil tanker reached Tórshavn in 1935, when Valdemar Lutzen represented DDPA. In 1949 Esmar Fuglø united Føroysk Oljusøla (Faroese Oil Trade) with DDPA, which remained part of the Esso oil company. During the 1950s, Faroese companies developed significantly, and the oil company expanded its cooperation, purchased an oil ship, and built filling stations under the Esso name. In 1987 the company changed its name to Statoil and remained part of it as Føroya Oljufelag in 1998. In 2007 Faroese owners bought a portion of Statoil from the Norwegians, and the company changed its name to Effo. The name plays on the letters FO, the abbreviation of Føroya Orkufelag, and also the international abbreviation for the Faroe Islands, used for example as the ending of Faroese internet addresses. Today Effo operates a nationwide network of filling stations, offers food under the name "Fast," and employs around 200 people. It has also expanded into green energy solutions, including heat pumps and heating services.
