Overview
Egea Records is an Italian independent record label founded in 1994 in Perugia by Antonio Miscenà. It grew out of earlier production experiences with the classical and early-music label Quadrivium, and its first four catalogue titles were produced between 1991 and 1994 under Quadrivium before being reissued on Egea. The label is part of the broader EGEA group, which also includes the imprints Quadrivium, Le Vele, Radar Records and EGEA Small, as well as a record shop in Perugia's historic centre, concert promotion activities, music publishing (EGEA Edizioni Musicali) and a children's music label. In its early phase Egea became a reference point for Italian musicians working across jazz and classical crossover, including Gabriele Mirabassi, Enrico Pieranunzi, Mario Brunello, Pietro Tonolo, Bebo Ferra, Marco Zurzolo, Germano Mazzocchetti, Cristina Zavalloni, Maria Pia De Vito, Rita Marcotulli and Stefano Cantini. It later expanded internationally, welcoming artists such as Gil Goldstein, Marc Johnson, John Taylor, Marco Pereira, Sergio Assad, Guinga, André Mehmari, Kenny Wheeler and Richard Galliano. Its catalogue spans jazz, classical, Brazilian and Mediterranean music, and it has received recognition including a 2001 Critics Choice Award nomination and a 2006 Top Jazz award for best group. Egea Records remains active, releasing new titles and maintaining a catalogue that documents more than three decades of Italian and international jazz and classical production.
History
Egea Records was founded in 1994 in Perugia, Italy, by Antonio Miscenà. Its origins trace back to Quadrivium, a label specializing in classical and early music founded in 1987, under which the first four Egea catalogue titles were produced between 1991 and 1994. The label was officially established in conjunction with an Umbria Jazz concert, and over time it developed into a micro-world of musicians, audiences, journalists and festival organizers. In its first production phase, Egea became a reference point for Italian musicians active in crossover genres such as classical jazz and popular jazz. Among the artists who recorded for the label were Gabriele Mirabassi, Enrico Pieranunzi, Mario Brunello, Pietro Tonolo, Bebo Ferra, Marco Zurzolo, Germano Mazzocchetti, Cristina Zavalloni, Maria Pia De Vito, Rita Marcotulli and Stefano Cantini. The label later broadened its horizons by welcoming international artists whose music and spirit of research and experimentation matched Egea's poetics, including Gil Goldstein, Marc Johnson, John Taylor, Marco Pereira, Sergio Assad, Guinga, André Mehmari, Kenny Wheeler and Richard Galliano. The EGEA group expanded beyond the main label to include other imprints: Quadrivium (founded 1987, specializing in classical and early music, with about 100 titles), Le Vele, Radar Records (focused on new proposals from young artists) and EGEA Small (a label specializing in music for children, closely linked to music education experiences in schools in the Perugia area). The group also operates a record shop in Perugia's historic centre, promotes concerts in Italy and abroad, and runs EGEA Edizioni Musicali, which holds most of the rights related to the music contained in the CDs produced by the label, as well as publishing books and publications on musical subjects under the EGEA Edizioni brand. Egea Records has received recognition including a 2001 Critics Choice Award nomination for 'Racconti Mediterranei' by Enrico Pieranunzi, listed among the best 19 jazz CDs in the world, and a 2006 Top Jazz award for best group. The label continues to release new music, with recent titles including works by Claudio Carboni and Riccardo Tesi, Gabriele Mirabassi and Simone Zanchini, and Rogério Tavares.
