Overview
EGT Energiehandel is a German energy company associated with the EGT Unternehmensgruppe (EGT Group), a regional energy group headquartered in St. Georgen im Schwarzwald in Germany's Black Forest region. The group traces its origins to the late 19th century electrification of the Black Forest and today describes itself as a pioneer of sustainable energy supply, rooted in the Black Forest but active throughout Germany. Its corporate motto is "the energy of change" (Energie der Veränderung). The EGT Group operates through five wholly owned subsidiaries of EGT AG, covering grid operation, energy sales, electro- and information-technology building equipment, intelligent energy solutions and internal consulting. EGT Energie GmbH operates the regional electricity, gas and heating networks; EGT Energievertrieb GmbH handles electricity, gas and energy solutions for private and business customers and intelligent procurement strategies for mid-sized companies; EGT Gebäudetechnik GmbH is one of the leading providers of electro- and information-technology building equipment; and EGT Energy Solutions GmbH advises on, plans and installs photovoltaic systems, electricity storage and charging infrastructure. The group reports around 280 employees across four locations. EGT Energiehandel sits within this group as an energy trading entity. The group's history reaches back to 1884, when the first electric arc lamp was installed on the Triberg market square, and to 1896, when the Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Triberg GmbH was founded. Over the following decades the company expanded into high-voltage substations, natural gas supply and modern, energy-efficient buildings. In 2018 the shareholder circle was widened when Alb-Elektrizitätswerk Geislingen-Steige eG became a strategic partner, and in 2020 the group moved into the "Rundling," a pioneering new building in St. Georgen. As part of the EGT Group, EGT Energiehandel participates in the group's broader mission of efficiency, security and ecology in energy. The group is privately held, with Alb-Elektrizitätswerk Geislingen-Steige eG as its main shareholder, and is led by Jens Buchholz as sole board member of EGT AG since 2019.
History
The history of the EGT Group, to which EGT Energiehandel belongs, begins in the late 19th century with the electrification of the Black Forest. In 1884 the first electric arc lamp was installed on the Triberg market square. In 1892 Carl Meissner, director of the AEG installation office in Frankfurt, took over the electricity works of the town of Triberg, with his brother-in-law Friedrich Kranich as partner, founding the firm "Meissner & Co." In 1893 the Oberes Werk at the Triberg waterfall was commissioned, beginning three-phase current generation and transmission to Hornberg and, in 1894, to Furtwangen. Also in 1894, the "Akkumulatorenfabrik Triberg" was founded in the Loch area of Schönwald. In 1896 Friedrich Wilhelm von Schoen, Wilhelm Eduard von Schoen, Prof. Dr. Carl Linde, Friedrich Kranich and Carl Meissner founded the Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Triberg GmbH; the articles of association were ratified on 19 May 1896, and Carl Meissner was appointed managing director. This date is regarded as the founding of the company that became today's EGT Group. Over the 20th century the company expanded its infrastructure. In November 1963 the 110/15 kV substation in St. Georgen was commissioned. In 1983 the EGT main building at its current location was completed, marking a new phase of corporate development. In 1984 the company began building its natural gas supply, starting in Hornberg, which became a successful and environmentally friendly business line. In the 21st century the group continued to modernize and broaden its ownership. In 2018 the shareholder circle was expanded when Alb-Elektrizitätswerk Geislingen-Steige eG became a strategic partner. In 2020 the "Rundling," a pioneering new building of EGT AG in St. Georgen, was occupied; it houses EGT Gebäudetechnik GmbH and demonstrates the possibilities of modern, energy-efficient construction. The group now comprises five wholly owned subsidiaries of EGT AG covering grid operation, energy sales, electro- and information-technology building equipment, intelligent energy solutions and internal consulting, with around 280 employees at four locations. EGT Energiehandel operates within this group as an energy trading entity.
