Overview

El Bruguers is the municipal newspaper of Gavà, a city in the Baix Llobregat comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It is published by the Ajuntament de Gavà (Gavà city council) and is one of the longest-running local publications in the area. Its first issue appeared on 29 June 1958, timed to the summer festival of Sant Pere, and it carried the subtitle "Editado por FET y de las Jons", identifying it at the time as an organ of the Francoist single party. The name was chosen by the Francoist authorities as a counterpoint to the earlier Catalanist and secular magazine L'Aramprunyà, invoking Brugués, a place associated with religious tradition. Under the direction of Antoni Tarrida Pugès, who took over in May 1966, the paper reached its period of greatest prestige, publishing contributions from local scholars such as Marian Colomé, Josep Soler Vidal and the municipal secretary Joan Vila Canut. In 1974 Tarrida was forced to resign abruptly after publishing a report on the harms and breaches caused by the Garraf landfill. Antoni Barba succeeded him and introduced design changes; the last issue of this first era was number 189, covering May–June 1976. After the transition to democracy, the masthead fell into disuse until 1982, when the new democratic council bought it back from the Movimiento. The first issue of the new era appeared in April of that year and announced the annual asparagus fair (Fira d'espàrrecs) for which Gavà is known. In its early years the revived paper was highly propagandistic with little journalistic content, but the change of decade brought a new layout and the masthead adopted the article "El". In 2005 El Bruguers received the Premi Arrel from the Diputació de Barcelona as the best municipal information publication of 2004. In February 2006 the old name "Brugués" was normalised and the paper has since been called El Bruguers. Today the brand lives primarily online as El Bruguers Digital, whose tagline is "les notícies de Gavà" (the news of Gavà). The site organises coverage under sections including La Portada, Societat, Política, Cultura, Esports, Economia and Entrevista, and it links to Gavà TV and Ràdio Gavà. It publishes local news on municipal politics, education, traditions, sports and commerce, and maintains a presence on Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and RSS. As a council-owned outlet, it functions as a public-service local news brand rather than a commercial newspaper group.

History

El Bruguers was founded as the municipal newspaper of Gavà and its first issue appeared on 29 June 1958, for the summer festival of Sant Pere. It was created as an organ of Falange, the Francoist single party, and carried the subtitle "Editado por FET y de las Jons". The Francoist authorities chose the name Brugués — a place linked to religion and tradition — in deliberate opposition to the previous magazine L'Aramprunyà, which had a Catalanist and secular character. The first director was Joan Grau. In May 1966, Antoni Tarrida Pugès, who had been part of the editorial team for three years, was appointed director of the newspaper. Under his direction the publication reached its period of greatest prestige. Its pages hosted collaborations from local scholars such as Marian Colomé, Josep Soler Vidal and the municipal secretary Joan Vila Canut. In 1974 Antoni Tarrida had to step down overnight after publishing a report on the harms and non-compliance associated with the Garraf landfill. Antoni Barba succeeded him and introduced changes to the design. The last issue of this stage was number 189, corresponding to May–June 1976. The masthead, which had formed part of the press of the Francoist "Movimiento Nacional" organisation, fell into disuse until 1982, when the new democratic city council bought the masthead from the Movimiento. The first issue of the new era appeared in April of that year, announcing the Fira d'espàrrecs (asparagus fair) held annually in Gavà. In its early years the revived publication remained highly propagandistic with little or no informative content. The change of decade brought a new layout and the masthead incorporated the article, becoming El Bruguers. In 2005 El Bruguers received the Premi Arrel, awarded by the Diputació de Barcelona, as the best municipal information publication of 2004. In February 2006 the old name Brugués was normalised and since then the publication has been called El Bruguers. In the 21st century the brand extended into digital publishing. Its online outlet, El Bruguers Digital, presents itself as "les notícies de Gavà" and organises local coverage under sections such as La Portada, Societat, Política, Cultura, Esports, Economia and Entrevista, alongside links to Gavà TV and Ràdio Gavà. It reports on municipal plenary sessions, education, local traditions, sports clubs and neighbourhood commerce, and distributes content through Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and RSS feeds.
