Overview

El Fanal (officially El Fanal Col·lectiu Cultural i Ecologista) is a cultural and ecological association based in the Moianès comarca of Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 1987, it works to preserve and publicise the natural environment of the region, contributing to the conservation of its natural spaces and biodiversity. The organisation describes itself as a cultural and ecological collective of the Moianès, active since 1987. The association operates across the municipalities of the Moianès, including Calders, Monistrol de Calders, Granera, Castellterçol, Sant Quirze de Safaja, Castellcir, Moià, L'Estany, Santa Maria d'Oló and Collsuspina. Its work combines technical, scientific and communication-based arguments with public advocacy for the protection of natural heritage. El Fanal runs and participates in several environmental projects. These include control of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), identification of power lines dangerous to birds, protection of the house martin (oreneta cuablanca), participation in the mammal atlas of the Observatory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, and study of the water quality of the springs of the Moianès. In 2021 it published a report on the state of the water in the springs of the Moianès. The collective celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012. Over the years its advocacy has consistently involved denouncing problems affecting species, ecosystems and the relationship between people and the environment in the Moianès area. It maintains an official website adapted to smartphones, tablets and laptops, and invites the public to participate in disseminating, valuing and preserving the environment.

History

El Fanal was founded in 1987 as a cultural and ecological association for the defence of the environment of the Moianès, the dissemination of information on these matters and the sensitisation of the population. From its beginnings, its demands for the protection of natural heritage were accompanied by technical, scientific and communication-based reasoning. In 2012 the association celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. The advocacy carried out over those years was always linked to denouncing problems affecting species, ecosystems and the relations between the environment and people in the Moianès area. In 2021 the collective published a report on the state of the water in the springs of the Moianès, one of several ongoing projects. Along with other naturalists, El Fanal has worked on the control of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), the search for power lines dangerous to birds, the protection of the house martin (oreneta cuablanca), participation in the mammal atlas of the Observatory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, and the study of the state of the waters of the springs of the Moianès. The association remains active and invites the public to participate in its work.
