Overview

Eldona Societo Esperanto (ESE) is a Swedish publishing house that issues books in and about Esperanto. According to the Esperanto Wikipedia, it began publishing Esperanto-related books in 1918, initiated by Adolf Larsson, and became active under the leadership of Henning Halldor in 1925. The publisher is also known in Swedish as Förlagsföreningen Esperanto and Esperantoförlaget, and its current successor or related activity appears under the name Esperantobokens vänner, based in Gothenburg. ESE's catalogue has historically included textbooks, reading and exercise books, grammars, dictionaries and literary translations. From 1925 to 1934 it published seven textbooks, seven reading and exercise books and about ten literary works, including Per Balono al la Poluso (1930), Gösta Berling (1934) and Sveda Antologio (1934). Some of its grammars reached tens of thousands of copies. It has also been one of the larger sellers of foreign Esperanto publications. Over the decades the publisher issued works by authors such as Guy de Maupassant, Harry Martinson, Frans G. Bengtsson, Alfred Nobel, Astrid Lindgren and Tibor Sekelj, often in translation into Esperanto. A major reference work is Ebbe Vilborg's five-volume Etimologia vortaro de Esperanto (1989–2001). More recent titles include Sten Johansson's Kroze - proze (2013) and translations such as Orm la ruĝa Dua volumo (2019). The official website of Esperantobokens vänner describes the organisation as formerly Esperantoförlaget/Eldona Societo Esperanto and states that it publishes books in Esperanto, including readers, teaching materials and dictionaries, among them a five-volume etymological dictionary. The publisher is therefore best understood as a specialised Esperanto-language publisher and bookseller with a long history in Sweden.

History

Eldona Societo Esperanto (ESE) is a Swedish publishing house that began issuing books in and about Esperanto in 1918. The initiative came from Adolf Larsson, who served as treasurer from 1918 to 1938. According to Enciklopedio de Esperanto (EdE), the society became actively productive under the leadership of Henning Halldor in 1925; Halldor led the organisation from 1918 to 1941. Bernhard Eriksson then led from 1941 to 1945, and Sune W. Ahlm is recorded as leader in 1948. Rudolf Pehrsson was at one time a collaborator and secretary. From 1925 to 1934 the publisher issued seven textbooks, seven reading and exercise books, and about ten literary works. Among these were Per Balono al la Poluso (1930), Gösta Berling (1934) and Sveda Antologio (1934). The value of those works was calculated in 1934 at 66 Swiss francs in gold currency. Some of its grammars reached tens of thousands of copies, and ESE also became one of the largest sellers of foreign Esperanto publications. Eriksson owned a printing press, and for a period from 1925 all works of Eldona Societo Esperanto were printed there. The post-war catalogue includes Pollando rekonstruigas el ruinoj by E. Rodan (1948), La Normandaj rakontoj by Guy de Maupassant translated by Roland Dupuis (1953), Sveda poemaro translated by Magda Carlsson (1954), and the Serio Oriento-okcidento series beginning in 1961. Other titles include Kredo, floroj kaj dinamito by Ernst Olsson (1961), Sipestro rakontas by Frans Tage Lundquist (1962), Islandaj pravoĉoj translated by Baldur Ragnarsson (1964), El la vivo de Ludoviko Zamenhof – la junaĝaj jaroj by Gösta Henriksson (1964), Kredo al dio en la atomepoko by Gustaf Lundberg (1965), Jaroj sur tero by Lakshimiswar Sinha (1966), and Tra lando de indianoj by Tibor Sekelj (1970). Later decades saw Aniaro by Harry Martinson translated by William Auld and Bertil Nilsson (1979), Ho ve, miaj ŝuoj! by Georg Fröschel (1981), Ne nur leteroj de plum-amikoj by Marjorie Boulton (1984), and the five-volume Etimologia vortaro de Esperanto by Ebbe Vilborg (1989–2001). Orm la ruĝa by Frans G. Bengtsson appeared in 1989, with a second volume, Hejme kaj en Oriento, in 2019. The 2000s and 2010s brought titles such as Ômotos mission på esperanto and Kelkaj faktoj pri la budhismo (2002), Nemeza by Alfred Nobel translated by Gunnar Gällmo (2003), La frakseno Igdrasilo by Alf Henrikson (2005), Mio, mia filo by Lindgren and Kion ajn by Sten Johansson (2006), Vizaĝoj edited by Leif Nordenstorm (2010), Arne, la ĉefido by Leif Nordenstorm (2012), Kroze - proze by Sten Johansson (2013), Flugorango rakontas retold by Johan Galtung (2013), Ĥodapro by Folke Wedlin and Söka bostad i storstaden (2014), La korto by Kristian Lundberg translated by Gunnar Gällmo (2015), and Malvarma bufedo by Jenny Wrangborg translated by Gunnar Gällmo (2017). The official website of Esperantobokens vänner identifies the organisation as formerly Esperantoförlaget/Eldona Societo Esperanto and states that it publishes books in Esperanto, including readers, teaching materials and dictionaries, among them a five-volume etymological dictionary. The publishing activity thus continues under a related name in Gothenburg.
