Electric Citizen

Electric Citizen is a web strategy, design, and development agency based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 2012, the firm has grown into a tight-knit team of strategists, designers, and developers who focus on digital experiences that are accessible, usable, and built for the long term. The agency partners primarily with government agencies, higher education institutions, and mission-driven organizations, helping them communicate clearly and serve their communities effectively. The company's core services span web strategy and analysis, UX and UI design, custom web development, accessibility compliance, data migration, and ongoing support and maintenance. Electric Citizen is especially known for its deep expertise in Drupal, which it uses as its primary platform for complex, content-rich websites — particularly for government and higher-education clients. The agency also works with WordPress for smaller or less complex sites where ease of use and speed to launch are priorities, applying the same standards around accessibility, performance, and security. Electric Citizen maintains preferred partner relationships with enterprise hosting providers such as Pantheon and Acquia, reflecting hands-on experience delivering and supporting complex Drupal-based sites. Its work is rooted in WCAG-aligned accessibility standards, and the agency offers accessibility testing, training, and compliance planning. The firm also publishes EC Insights, a newsletter covering online content and technology topics. Representative clients and projects include the Office of Higher Ed, the City of Santa Barbara, and the Department of Children, Youth and Families, among others. The agency positions itself around the idea of being "Rooted in Strategy. Built to Last." — delivering websites that are secure, compliant, and effective over the long term. As a private company, Electric Citizen does not disclose detailed financial information, but it operates as an established specialist agency in the public-sector and higher-education digital services market.

Electric Citizen was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From its early years, the agency focused on building websites for organizations whose missions center on public service and education. Over time, it developed a specialization in Drupal, the open-source content management system known for its structured content model, granular permissions, and strong accessibility foundation — qualities that make it well suited for large teams, long-term governance, and evolving digital needs in government and higher-education settings. The agency grew into a tight-knit team of strategists, designers, and developers. Its service offering expanded from initial web design and development into a full suite that includes web strategy and analysis, UX and UI design, custom web development, accessibility compliance, data migration, and ongoing support and maintenance. A defining characteristic of the firm is its commitment to accessibility: it builds to WCAG standards and provides accessibility testing, training, and compliance planning for clients. Electric Citizen has worked with a wide range of content management systems over the years, which informed its clear point of view on platform selection. Drupal became its primary platform for complex, content-rich websites, especially for government and higher-education organizations. WordPress is used for smaller or less complex sites where ease of use and speed to launch are priorities. The agency also established preferred partner relationships with enterprise hosting providers Pantheon and Acquia, giving clients direct access to platform expertise for complex Drupal-based sites. Representative work includes projects for the Office of Higher Ed, the City of Santa Barbara, and the Department of Children, Youth and Families. The agency also publishes EC Insights, a newsletter covering online content and technology.
