Overview

Electro-Cirkel is a Dutch wholesaler specialising in high-quality lighting products and electronic equipment, materials and components. Founded in 1970 by Mr Van Soelen and his brother as a wholesale business for electrical products, the company has grown into an international operation with attractive own brands and a customer portfolio spanning the retail, maritime and industrial sectors. It is headquartered in Rotterdam, where it operates from premises on the Lyonstraat with warehouse space for nearly 14,000 pallets. The company serves three main customer groups through two dedicated divisions: Electro Cirkel Retail and Electro Cirkel Marine & Industry. The Retail division supplies over 7,000 lightbulbs and related items to retailers and their customers, while the Marine & Industry division offers more than 14,000 electrical items for the shipping and industrial sectors. Electro-Cirkel describes itself as a genuine family business, proud of its history, with over a hundred employees. Electro-Cirkel's flagship own brand is Calex, a bold and creative lighting brand with over 400 light sources, focused on interiors, lifestyle and design. The company also owns the Eurolight brand, which offers entry-level lamps and a basic lighting portfolio, and the Majestic brand, which provides sustainable light sources with competitive pricing. In addition, Electro-Cirkel supplies batteries, flashlights and chargers, and offers private label services for retailers wishing to introduce their own brand of light sources. The company's history includes several key milestones: relocation to larger premises in 1980, the acquisition of California Export (CALEX) in 1987, which made Electro-Cirkel one of the biggest manufacturers of navigation lights, and the acquisition of a lamp factory in Latvia in 1994 for the Calex brand. In 1995, the founders distributed shares among their five children, and in 1997 production of lamps for Calex increased through cooperation with two Romanian factories. Today, Electro-Cirkel continues to operate as a private, family-owned business, with a management system based on ISO 9001 and 14001 standards, and a strong focus on quality, sustainability and customer service.

History

Electro-Cirkel was founded in 1970 by Mr Van Soelen and his brother as a wholesale business for electrical products, supplying ships and industry. The company was initially located on Slaghekstraat in Rotterdam, near the Feyenoord stadium. In 1980, the founders relocated to larger premises on Piekstraat in Rotterdam, with extra office space and more storage space for stock; at that time, the Electro Cirkel team consisted of 30 employees. In 1987, Electro-Cirkel acquired California Export (CALEX), a company specialising in navigation lights for ocean-going and inland waterway shipping. With this acquisition, Electro-Cirkel became one of the biggest manufacturers of navigation lights. Calex had already become Electro-Cirkel's brand for navigation lights in 1987, and it was a small step to use this brand to enter the wider market for lighting. In 1994, a lamp factory in Latvia was acquired for Calex to produce functional lighting for the brand, with up to 25 million lamps produced there per year. In the same year, Electro-Cirkel relocated to its present premises on the Lyonstraat in Rotterdam. In 1995, the founders distributed the shares in Electro-Cirkel among their five children. In 1997, in cooperation with two Romanian factories, the production of lamps for Calex increased to 200 million per year. Since then, Electro-Cirkel has continued to grow as a family business. It now operates two divisions: Electro Cirkel Retail and Electro Cirkel Marine & Industry. The company has over a hundred employees and warehouse space for nearly 14,000 pallets. Its management system is based on ISO 9001 and 14001 standards, reflecting a focus on quality and environmental impact. The company remains privately held by the Van Soelen family.
