Overview
Elements, also known as Adventure Time: Elements, is an eight-episode event miniseries produced as part of the ninth season of the American animated television series Adventure Time. It aired on Cartoon Network in the United States from April 24 through April 27, 2017, and later received broadcasts in other markets, including Australia and the United Kingdom. It is the third and final Adventure Time miniseries, following Stakes and Islands. The story begins after Finn, Jake, and BMO return from the events of Islands and find Ooo radically altered. Extreme elemental magic has transformed the land into a dystopian collection of candy, ice, slime, and fire environments. Many familiar characters have been changed or placed under the influence of elemental forces. Princess Bubblegum has become a powerful candy entity, Flame Princess has been transformed into a dragon-like ruler, Slime Princess controls a dangerous social world, and Patience St. Pim’s attempt to manipulate the elementals has produced consequences beyond her control. Finn and Jake join forces with Ice King, Betty, and Lumpy Space Princess in an effort to reverse the catastrophe. Their journey involves recovering jewels embedded in the crowns of the elemental rulers and using them with an alternate version of the Enchiridion. The miniseries combines an adventure quest with character-focused stories about friendship, identity, emotional dependence, violence, and the consequences of trying to control other people. A major plot development occurs when Betty abandons the group in an attempt to alter Simon’s history, while Lumpy Space Princess ultimately proves resistant to the elemental transformation and becomes central to restoring Ooo. Elements was developed by Adventure Time head writer Kent Osborne, showrunner Adam Muto, Jack Pendarvis, and Julia Pott, with Patrick McHale contributing to the story of “Cloudy.” Cole Sanchez and Elizabeth Ito served as supervising directors, and Sandra Lee was the art director. The production used a dedicated opening sequence animated by Science SARU, with storyboards by Hanna K. Nyström and a theme performed by Hynden Walch. The miniseries retained the program’s ensemble voice-recording approach, in which principal performers recorded together to create more natural dialogue. The event was among the more heavily viewed portions of Adventure Time’s ninth season. Individual episodes reached approximately 0.98 million United States viewers, while the eight installments were generally reported at around 0.90 million viewers each. Critics responded favorably overall, praising the visual redesigns, emotional focus, surrealism, and the renewed emphasis on Finn and Jake’s relationship, although some reviewers found the latter half’s collection-of-jewels structure repetitive. Elements was released on DVD in Australia on July 3, 2018.
History
Elements emerged from Cartoon Network’s strategy of presenting Adventure Time mythology through limited event stories. After Stakes aired during the show’s seventh season in 2015, and Islands followed during its eighth season in early 2017, Cartoon Network announced Elements on March 30, 2017. The project had been anticipated by earlier comments about additional miniseries and specials preceding the eventual series finale. The production was developed within the Adventure Time creative team. Kent Osborne, Adam Muto, Jack Pendarvis, and Julia Pott shaped the overarching story, while Patrick McHale contributed to “Cloudy,” which drew on material from an unused early-season concept. Julia Pott’s participation marked her first writing work for the series. Storyboard artists included Sam Alden, Polly Guo, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Steve Wolfhard, Graham Falk, Hanna K. Nyström, Aleks Sennwald, Kent Osborne, and Laura Knetzger. Cole Sanchez and Elizabeth Ito supervised direction, and Sandra Lee handled art direction. The miniseries was designed to look distinct from ordinary Adventure Time episodes. Its dedicated opening sequence was storyboarded by Hanna K. Nyström and animated by Science SARU, whose work also appeared on the openings for Stakes and Islands. The sequence reflects the four elemental settings and uses a theme performed by Hynden Walch, the voice of Princess Bubblegum. The principal cast continued the show’s practice of recording ensemble sessions rather than recording every performance separately. This approach was intended to preserve the timing and spontaneity of group performance. Narratively, the miniseries follows Finn, Jake, and BMO as they return to Ooo and encounter a landscape dominated by candy, ice, slime, and fire magic. Ice King explains that Patience St. Pim attempted to use Betty and the elemental rulers in a plan that went wrong. Finn and Jake travel through the transformed kingdoms to collect the required jewels, encountering altered versions of Princess Bubblegum, Slime Princess, Flame Princess, and other recurring characters. The quest also exposes tensions involving violence, control, memory, and the changing identities of the characters. Betty’s attempt to use the recovered materials to prevent Simon’s transformation into Ice King introduces a separate tragic objective and ends with her being transported to Mars. Lumpy Space Princess becomes the unexpected counterforce to the elemental magic and restores Ooo, although the final image leaves Jake physically changed. This combination of spectacle and unresolved consequences helped Elements function both as a self-contained event and as part of Adventure Time’s larger mythology. The United States premiere episodes attracted approximately 0.826 million viewers collectively, while the second and third installments reached about 0.98 million viewers each. The final two episodes drew roughly 0.9 million viewers collectively and recorded approximately 0.21 in the reported 18–49 demographic. The miniseries later aired on Cartoon Network Australia from June 19 to June 23, 2017, and on Cartoon Network UK from December 4 to December 7, 2017. It was released on DVD in Australia on July 3, 2018. Critical responses were broadly positive, with reviewers highlighting its emotional center and visual redesigns, while noting that its later structure could feel repetitive.
