Overview
El'ezra Holdings Ltd (Hebrew: אלעזרא החזקות בע"מ), commonly known as the El'ezra Group (קבוצת אלעזרא), is a private Israeli holding and investment company controlled by businessman Eli El'ezra. The group was founded in 1995 by Eli El'ezra, who established the construction firm "El'ezra Initiative and Investments," which in time became "El'ezra Holdings," the base company of the group. Its head offices are located in Ashkelon. The group operates across three main sectors: construction and real estate, insurance, and automotive leasing and financing. In the real-estate sector the group operates through Afridar, a company founded in 1951 by a group of Zionist immigrants from South Africa to build and develop the city of Ashkelon. Afridar later became a government-owned company and was privatized in 2001, when it was acquired by the El'ezra Group. Afridar engages in the initiation, planning, development, construction, marketing and sale of residential housing units, offices and commercial space, and is active in urban renewal projects across Israel. In the insurance sector the group operates through Hachshara, one of the oldest and leading insurance companies in Israel, which works mainly through insurance agents. In the automotive sector the group operates through the leasing and financing company Albar, a leading Israeli leasing company founded in 1994 that provides operational leasing and fleet management for businesses, private leasing (Easy Pay), vehicle sales, trade-in, vehicle financing and car rental. El'ezra Holdings was formerly a public company whose shares traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. In May 2007 El'ezra raised about 300 million shekels in bonds on the exchange for his holding company. Following the global financial crisis of 2008 there were concerns that El'ezra would not meet his debt repayments, but he succeeded in refinancing his debts and meeting the bond payments. In 2011 El'ezra delisted the company's shares from the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange after buying out the public's shares for 30 million shekels. The company's CEO is Or El'ezra, son of Eli El'ezra; in addition, about 12 other family members are employed in the company in senior management positions. The group also maintains community ties through the El'ezra Fund for the Needy, which grants scholarships to the underprivileged and supports welfare, education and academic institutions.
History
The El'ezra Group was founded in 1995 by businessman Eli El'ezra. The group's base company, "El'ezra Initiative and Investments," was a construction firm that in time became "El'ezra Holdings." In 2001 the group won a tender by the Government Companies Authority and acquired, for about 80 million shekels, the government company Afridar, which had been founded in 1950 (or 1951) to develop the city of Ashkelon. Initially businessman Moti Zisser was a partner in the deal, but he withdrew, and El'ezra borrowed the remaining payment from Bank Leumi. In February 2001 Eli El'ezra purchased the government company Afridar, and in May 2002 he bought the leasing company Albar. In 2002 the El'ezra Group acquired all the shares of Albar from Discount Investments and Albar's senior managers for 268.5 million shekels. In January 2006 the company "El'ezra Holdings" was established, with all its shares held by the parent company "El'ezra Initiative and Investments." In January 2006 Eli El'ezra also bought control of Hachshara HaYishuv Holdings Insurance from the Nimrodi family. In October of that year the group acquired about 82% of the shares of "Hachshara HaYishuv Insurance," controlled by the Nimrodi family, for about 90 million shekels; Bank Mizrahi-Tefahot provided El'ezra with 60 million shekels in financing for this transaction, and the remainder was funded from private sources. In May 2007 El'ezra raised about 300 million shekels on the stock exchange in bonds for his holding company, "El'ezra Holdings." Following the global economic crisis of 2008, there were concerns that El'ezra would not meet his debt repayments, but he succeeded in refinancing his debts and meeting the bond payments. In 2011 El'ezra delisted the company's shares from the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange after buying the public's shares for 30 million shekels. The group operates in three main sectors: construction and real estate through Afridar; insurance through Hachshara; and automotive through Albar. Afridar, founded in 1951 by a group of Zionist immigrants from South Africa to build and develop Ashkelon, became a government company and was privatized in 2001 when acquired by the El'ezra Group. Today Afridar focuses on residential real estate nationwide and is among the first companies to carry out urban renewal projects. The group also maintains community ties through the El'ezra Fund for the Needy, which grants scholarships to the underprivileged and supports welfare, education and academic institutions.
