Overview
Elixír do škol, z. ú. is a Czech non-profit organisation founded in 2013 to create the conditions for meaningful teaching of physics and digital technologies. It was conceived by a group of enthusiasts from Nadace Depositum Bonum — today Nadace České spořitelny — together with Projekt Heuréka, who wanted to give enthusiastic physics teachers a space for collegial sharing and mutual support. Rather than working directly with pupils, the organisation works through teachers and regional centres, strengthening science, technical and digital education across the Czech Republic while providing a safe environment for educators to meet, debate and exchange inspiration. The organisation operates a nationwide network of regional centres. According to its own description, it runs 29 regional centres, 11 flying physics centres, 8 DIGI centres, 1 Virtual Digicentrum, 1 online centre for both physics and DIGI topics, and 1 LEGO innovation studio. Physics centres are places where teachers inspire one another, passing on experience about how to teach in an engaging way — through experiments and by connecting physical phenomena to practical applications — with the aim of raising pupils' interest in physics and improving the overall quality of physics teaching. DIGI centres act as intermediaries between experts in the use of digital technologies and teachers, not only of informatics; their regular meetings are prepared by centre leaders together with teachers so that topics grow out of teachers' actual needs, letting them try out applications and technologies and apply them in class the next day. DIGI centres are supported by Nadace Jablotron and Nadace České spořitelny. Elixír do škol also runs an annual conference for teachers and supporters of physics and digital technologies at the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové. In May 2019 the conference drew more than 242 educators, who attended 3 lectures and 27 practical workshops for physics teachers; in May 2020 the conference was held online with 183 teachers and education supporters taking part. The organisation also co-founded the Albertus award for physics and informatics teachers at primary and secondary schools, together with seven other institutions including the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists, the Physics-Pedagogical Society of JČMF, the Czech Physical Society, Česká hlava, Svět techniky Ostrava and Prague's Planetum. Its website presents it as a learning professional network of educators that is transforming the teaching of physics, chemistry and digital technologies across regions, and it publishes news, an events calendar and recurring team challenges.
History
Elixír do škol was founded in 2013, when a group of enthusiasts from Nadace Depositum Bonum — today Nadace České spořitelny — and Projekt Heuréka came up with the idea of connecting and supporting teachers by creating a space for collegial sharing within a community of enthusiastic physics teachers. The organisation was established as a registered institute (z. ú.), a Czech non-profit legal form, and from the outset it focused on creating the conditions for meaningful teaching of physics and digital technologies. Its model is built on teachers rather than on direct instruction of pupils. Regional physics centres became the core of the network: places where teachers inspire one another and pass on experience about how to teach engagingly, using experiments and linking physical phenomena to practical applications, with the goal of increasing pupils' interest in physics and improving the quality of physics teaching overall. Over time the organisation extended this model to digital technologies. DIGI centres were created as intermediaries between experts in the use of digital technologies and teachers — not only teachers of informatics — with regular meeting topics prepared by centre leaders together with teachers so that they reflect teachers' real needs, allowing participants to try out applications and technologies and apply them in class the following day. The DIGI centres are supported by Nadace Jablotron and Nadace České spořitelny. The network grew to national scale. According to the organisation's own description, it now operates 29 regional centres, 11 flying physics centres, 8 DIGI centres, 1 Virtual Digicentrum, 1 online centre covering both physics and DIGI topics, and 1 LEGO innovation studio across the Czech Republic. A major recurring activity is the annual conference for teachers and supporters of physics and digital technologies, held at the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové. In May 2019 the conference welcomed more than 242 educators, who took part in 3 lectures and 27 practical workshops for physics teachers. In May 2020, the conference moved online and was attended by 183 teachers and education supporters. Elixír do škol also helped to establish the Albertus award for physics and informatics teachers at primary and secondary schools who are able to engage their pupils and inspire them to deeper study. It co-founded the award together with seven other institutions: the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists, the Physics-Pedagogical Society of JČMF, the Czech Physical Society, Česká hlava, Svět techniky Ostrava and Prague's Planetum. The organisation continues to publish news, an events calendar and recurring team challenges on its website, and in 2026 it announced joining the ESA-ESERO CZ consortium and the seventh edition of the Albertus support and recognition for outstanding physics and informatics teachers.
