Overview

Ellery Beach House is a beach resort and conference hotel located at Elfviks Udde on Lidingö, just outside central Stockholm, Sweden. It brands itself as "Stockholm's only Beach Resort" and combines hotel rooms, meeting facilities, restaurants, a spa, pools, a private marina, and a beach club in a design-forward setting. The property is operated by ESS Group under the Ellery Beach House name since 2020, following a history that began as an IBM education center in the late 1960s and later became the Blue Hotel conference facility. The resort offers 63 hotel rooms and 16 conference rooms of varying sizes, with a total rentable area of approximately 4,500 square meters on a large waterfront plot. Its south facade faces Höggarnsfjärden, and the architecture features hand-made brick, corten steel, and distinctive tower-like stairwells at each corner. The hotel emphasizes a relaxed, social atmosphere with sea views, archipelago dining, padel, spa, cabanas, art, and music. Ellery Beach House is positioned as an international destination only 18 minutes from central Stockholm. It has been recognized by Condé Nast Traveller on its list of "Best Hotels in Stockholm for a Stylish Stay." The property is privately held and operates as part of the ESS Group portfolio.

History

The property at Elfviks Udde on Lidingö was built between 1966 and 1969 as a training center for IBM, intended as a "Nordic Education Center" for Northern Europe. The architects were Alf Engström, Gunnar Landberg, Bengt Larsson, and Alvar Törneman from ELLT arkitektkontor. They designed a monumental building in brick and metal, with a long, narrow east-west orientation accented by tower-like stairwells at all four corners. The main building was constructed of hand-made brick in a warm red tone with struck joints. The south facade faces Höggarnsfjärden, and both south and north facades are clad in trapezoidal corrugated metal with a rust-red corten surface. Large window openings with bright red frames dominate the south side. Materials and colors were chosen to harmonize with the surrounding nature. Each meeting room received daylight, individual climate control, and soundproofing, and every hotel room had a sea view. At its opening in 1970, the building was described as "an architectural pearl." In 2003, the facility was acquired by hotel veteran Ejnar Söder, known as one of the initiators behind Esso Motorhotell, for SEK 29 million. The property then underwent extensive renovation and was converted into a hotel and conference facility known as Blue Hotel. In January 2014, Johan Svensson took over the operation of the hotel. Since 2020, the hotel operations have been run by ESS Group under the name Ellery Beach House, characterized by a luxury spa hotel feel with both indoor and outdoor pools as well as extensive restaurant operations. The hotel claims to be "Stockholm's only beach resort." Today it has 63 hotel rooms and 16 conference rooms of various sizes, with 4,500 square meters of rentable space on a large waterfront plot.
