Overview
Eloor Municipality is a local self-government body in the Aluva block of Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. It was upgraded from a panchayat to a municipality in 2010. The area is a significant industrial centre in Kerala, hosting major chemical and rare earth factories such as Hindustan Insecticides Limited, Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), Travancore Cochin Chemicals, and Indian Rare Earths. The municipality is bounded by Kadungalloor and Aluva panchayats to the north, Kalamassery Municipality and Churnikkara and Kadungalloor panchayats to the east, Kochi Corporation and Kalamassery Municipality to the south, and Varapuzha, Aluva, and Cheranalloor to the west. Historically, Eloor was a small island that was part of Travancore. The name is believed to derive from 'Elan's village' or from 'El' meaning to join, referring to the confluence of the Periyar river branch with Varapuzha backwaters. The local population is largely employed in nearby industrial establishments. The municipality has numerous places of worship, educational institutions, and has produced notable personalities in sports, cinema, and arts.
History
Eloor was historically a small island that formed part of the kingdom of Travancore. The name 'Eloor' is believed to have originated from 'Elan's village' (ഏലന്റെ ഊര്), or alternatively from 'El' meaning 'to join' or 'to meet', referring to the confluence of a branch of the Periyar river with the Varapuzha backwaters. Some historians also link the name to 'Himoparinagaram' mentioned in the Sanskrit text Sukasandesha. In 2010, Eloor was upgraded from a panchayat (village council) to a municipality, reflecting its growing urban and industrial significance. The area developed as a major industrial centre in Kerala, hosting large public sector undertakings such as Hindustan Insecticides Limited, Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), Travancore Cochin Chemicals, and Indian Rare Earths. These industries attracted workers from various parts of Kerala, many of whom settled permanently in Eloor. The municipality has since expanded its civic infrastructure, including educational institutions and places of worship. Notable figures associated with Eloor include M.K.K. Nair, a former head of FACT who established the FACT Kathakali school and the Lalithakala Centre, and several sports and film personalities.
