Overview

Ema is a United States-based enterprise software company that markets a platform for building and deploying AI agents, which it brands as 'Universal AI Employees.' The company was founded in California in February 2023 by Surojit Chatterjee, a former Chief Product Officer of Coinbase and a former VP and Head of Product at Google, where he scaled Google Mobile Ads and Google Shopping. Ema's stated mission is to 'Grow World GDP by Transforming Every Business With Universal AI Employees,' and it positions its agents as digital team members rather than conventional software tools. The platform targets functional business departments — principally HR, IT, and Finance — with AI Employees that automate routine work such as recruiting, onboarding, benefits administration, performance management, payroll, and IT support. Ema emphasizes four selling points: freeing employees from routine work, cutting software spend through SaaS consolidation and outcome-based pricing, connecting to existing systems via 250+ prebuilt integrations, and rapid deployment 'in days, not months' with or without engineers. Agents can be accessed through Microsoft Teams, Slack, voice, or other channels, described as a 'digital front door.' Beyond internal functions, Ema markets to professional services firms, offering agents for compliance monitoring, RFP generation, presentation creation, and employee assistance, as well as client-facing solutions for insurance, healthcare, and financial services. The platform supports cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped deployment options, which is notable for regulated industries. Ema has expanded internationally, with offices in Bangalore, London, and Canada in addition to its California headquarters. The company grew from roughly 50 employees to about 150 employees between 2024 and 2025 according to its own timeline. Its leadership team includes founder and CEO Surojit Chatterjee, COO Swati Trehan (formerly of Shopify, McKinsey, and Google), and global revenue lead Jonathan Feldm... (Jonathan Feldm...), formerly of Workato, Freshworks, Oracle, and SAP. Ema cites enterprise customers and partners including AMS, NTT DATA, and PwC, and its customer stories highlight agentic transformation of contingent workforce operations.

History

Ema was founded in California in February 2023 by Surojit Chatterjee, who had previously served as Chief Product Officer at Coinbase, guiding the company through its 2021 IPO, and as VP and Head of Product at Google, where he scaled Google Mobile Ads and Google Shopping into multi-billion-dollar businesses. Chatterjee holds 40 US patents and degrees from MIT (MBA), SUNY at Buffalo (MS in Computer Science), and IIT Kharagpur (B.Tech). The founding team's experience scaling and leading large teams at Google, Coinbase, Okta, and Shopify shaped Ema's mission to create a 'Universal AI Employee' that acts as another valued team member. The company's official timeline records a Bangalore office opening in May 2024, followed by growth from roughly 50 employees to about 150 employees between 2024 and 2025, and the establishment of a London office and a Canada office in subsequent years. Ema's platform is built around AI Employees for HR, IT, and Finance, with a strong emphasis on enterprise integration — 250+ prebuilt integrations — and flexible deployment including cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments. By 2025, Ema had expanded its go-to-market to professional services firms, offering agents for compliance checks, RFP generation, PPT generation, and employee assistance, as well as client-facing solutions for insurance, healthcare, and financial services. The company also formed partnerships, including with PwC, and published customer stories such as AMS, a global talent solutions business operating across 90+ countries, which used Ema and PwC to transform contingent workforce operations from manual, system-fragmented processes to AI-orchestrated, agentic delivery. Ema's leadership team includes COO Swati Trehan, formerly of Shopify, McKinsey, and Google, and global revenue lead Jonathan Feldm..., formerly of Workato, Freshworks, Oracle, and SAP.
