Overview
EMAG Zerbst Maschinenfabrik GmbH is a German machine tool manufacturer based in Zerbst, Saxony-Anhalt. It traces its origins to the Franz Braun Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei founded in 1867, which delivered its first lathe with a 12-metre bed to Henschel in Kassel in 1870. Between 1927 and 1945 the company built the medium-sized machines of the VDF-Einheitsdrehbank, a complete machine series developed together with three other companies based in Göppingen, Hannover and Hamburg. From 1950 to 1994, first as the state-owned VEB Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst (part of the Werkzeugmaschinenkombinat „7. Oktober“) and later as Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst GmbH, it mainly produced large and face lathes with faceplate diameters of up to 12,000 mm. In August 1994 the EMAG Group acquired WEMA Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst to expand its manufacturing capacity and developed the site into a central and significant production location. The operation in Zerbst was completely restructured. Since the takeover, new jobs were created: initially 160 employees were employed, and today more than 500 people work on the company premises, with an additional 10 to 12 apprentices trained per year. There are now 13 halls with a production area of 36,000 m². Within the EMAG Group, EMAG Zerbst Maschinenfabrik GmbH is the central production site for both standard machines and customer-specific machines, supplying end customers (for standard machines) as well as EMAG technology companies. In the EMAG technology companies, the machines are set up for the customer process or customer parts. The site is part of EMAG Production, a specialized manufacturing service provider with two locations in Germany. In Zerbst, the company offers comprehensive manufacturing capabilities in mechanical machining, sheet metal fabrication and assembly. Its particular strengths lie in the production of large-format components, high-precision components and demanding assemblies. A unique selling point is its own polymer concrete foundry for vibration-damping machine beds. The other location, EMAG LaserTec GmbH in Heubach (Baden-Württemberg), specializes in the production of smaller precision parts and the assembly of complex assemblies. By combining the two locations, EMAG Production covers the entire spectrum of industrial manufacturing and guarantees the highest quality, precision and exceptional vertical integration. Mid-1997 saw the establishment on the premises of Blechverarbeitung & Montage Zerbst GmbH (formerly SIRO – Blechbearbeitung & -lackierung GmbH), which produces sheet metal structures for base body production, energy containers and complete, function-compatible housings for machines. Since 2020, Blechverarbeitung und Montage Zerbst GmbH has been merged into EMAG Zerbst Maschinenfabrik GmbH. The company KmB Technologie Gesellschaft für rationelle Fertigung mbH was also established as a supplier for the automotive industry.
History
The company known today as EMAG Zerbst Maschinenfabrik GmbH originated from the Franz Braun Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik und Eisengießerei, founded in 1867. In 1870 it delivered its first lathe with a 12-metre-long bed to the company Henschel in Kassel. Between 1927 and 1945, the company built the medium-sized machines of the „VDF-Einheitsdrehbank“, a complete machine series developed together with three other companies based in Göppingen, Hannover and Hamburg. From 1950 to 1994, the company – until 1990 a state-owned enterprise, the VEB Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst (part of the Werkzeugmaschinenkombinat „7. Oktober“), and later the Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst GmbH – mainly produced large and face lathes with faceplate diameters of up to 12,000 mm and with correspondingly long planning horizons of several years. In August 1994, the WEMA Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst was taken over by the EMAG Group to expand its manufacturing capacities and developed into a central and significant production site. For this purpose, the operation in Zerbst was completely restructured. Since the takeover of WEMA Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Zerbst by EMAG, new jobs were created. Initially 160 employees were employed; today more than 500 employees work on the company premises, and additionally 10 to 12 apprentices are trained per year. In the meantime, 13 halls with a production area of 36,000 m² are available. Mid-1997 saw the establishment on the premises of the company Blechverarbeitung & Montage Zerbst GmbH (formerly: SIRO – Blechbearbeitung & -lackierung GmbH), which produces sheet metal constructions for base body production, energy containers and the complete and function-compatible housing for machines. Within the EMAG Group, EMAG Zerbst Maschinenfabrik GmbH is the central production site for both standard machines and customer-specific machines and supplies end customers (for standard machines) as well as EMAG technology companies. In the EMAG technology companies, the setup for the customer process or the customer parts takes place.
