Overview

The Embroiderers' Guild is a national charity dedicated to educating people of all ages about embroidery, from the pleasure of stitching to the design and creation of inspirational works. Founded in 1906 by sixteen ex-students of the Royal School of Needlework, the Guild promotes and encourages embroidery, educates the public, supports research, and preserves fine examples of embroidery. It publishes Embroidery magazine six times a year and offers membership opportunities.

History

The Guild was founded in 1906, when sixteen ex-students of the Royal School of Needlework got together to found a society to 'deal entirely with Embroidery, and with the first object of keeping up a high standard of work and design.' The collection started from humble beginnings with 'Model Boxes' distributed to members. Queen Mary made a significant donation, and in 1935 Lady Mary Cayley bequeathed 15 pieces of historic embroidery. The collection has been stored in various locations including Hampton Court Palace and Wimpole Street, London.
