Overview
Emder Ruderverein e. V. is a sports club in Emden, Lower Saxony, Germany, founded in 1906 to promote the sport of rowing. It is the oldest rowing club in the city and a member of the German Rowing Association (Deutscher Ruderverband, DRV). Beyond recreational and competitive rowing, the club has expanded into other disciplines: volleyball since 1972 and dragon boat racing since 2008. It also offers gymnastics and strength training, and maintains a club gymnasium (Kraftraum) with modern equipment. The club traces its origins to young engineers of the Nordseewerke shipyard who rowed in a rowing and sailing club around the turn of the 20th century. The formal association was founded on 15 May 1906, when 20 men met in the Delfthalle in Emden. The first chairman was Dr. Conrad Zorn, and the club initially owned three boats. In 1907 it moved into its own boathouse at the Doele-Piepen-Tief, and in 1912 it joined the German Rowing Association. Over the following decades the club merged with other local rowing clubs: in 1923/1924 with Ruderverein Ostfriesland to form "Der Emder Ruderverein", and in 1977 with the Emder Damen Ruderverein (founded 1913) to form today's Emder Ruderverein. The club has a strong competitive record, with more than 1,500 victories in boats from single sculls to eights at regattas of the German Rowing Association, several German championship titles, and Olympic participation by Manfred Weinreich and Thomas Hitzbleck. It hosts the annual "Emden Rund" regatta, a major local rowing event that includes a traditional lantern boat parade (Lampionfahrt). The club also runs a foundation (Stiftung) to support its financial sustainability amid fluctuating membership and demographic change. As a registered non-profit association (e. V.), Emder Ruderverein is member-owned and not a commercial company. Its activities are centered on the boathouse at the Kesselschleuse in Emden and the surrounding rowing waters. The club welcomes guests and new members and provides services such as a membership program, a rowing area guide, a gym usage schedule, and a kilometer statistics tracking for rowing and dragon boat paddling.
History
The Emder Ruderverein e. V. was founded in 1906 in Emden to promote the sport of rowing. Its roots go back to the turn of the 20th century, when young engineers of the Nordseewerke shipyard rowed in a rowing and sailing club. The formal club was established on 15 May 1906, when 20 men met in the Delfthalle in Emden. It was the first rowing club in the city. The first chairman was Dr. Conrad Zorn, and the club initially owned three boats. In 1907 the club moved into its own boathouse at the Doele-Piepen-Tief, and in 1912 it joined the German Rowing Association (Deutscher Ruderverband). In 1911, employees of the post and telegraph office founded another rowing club in Emden under the name Ruderverein Ostfriesland, with its boathouse at the Fehntjer Tief near the Kesselschleuse. In the same year, the student rowing club "Wiking" was established from teacher and student circles of the Königliches Wilhelmsgymnasium, but it did not survive the First World War. Until then, these were purely men's clubs. In 1913, on the initiative of secondary school teacher Ida Doll, the Emder Damen Ruderverein was founded, enabling women to take part in the sport in their own club. Due to the difficult economic situation, the Emder Ruderverein von 1906 and the Ruderverein Ostfriesland merged in 1923 (some sources say 1924) to form "Der Emder Ruderverein". At that time it had 183 active members and 23 boats. Towards the end of the Second World War in 1945, all clubs were dissolved. In 1946, some athletes resumed training as the "Rudergemeinschaft Emden". In 1948, training was officially taken up again. The building of the women's club was the only one to survive the war and was subsequently used jointly by the rowing clubs. In 1951, the ERV built a new boathouse at the Kesselschleuse, which was replaced by a newer one in 1963. In 1969, the two remaining clubs agreed on a cooperation contract for a common sporting goal, which in 1977 led to the merger of "Der Emder Ruderverein" and the Emder Damen Ruderverein into today's Emder Ruderverein. The club has since expanded its range of sports: volleyball has been part of the club since 1972, and dragon boat racing since 2008. The club also offers gymnastics and strength training, and maintains a club gymnasium. It is a member of the German Rowing Association. Sporting successes include more than 1,500 victories in almost all boat classes, from single sculls to eights, at regattas of the German Rowing Association, several German championship titles, and Olympic participation by Manfred Weinreich and Thomas Hitzbleck. The club has published commemorative publications for its 50th anniversary (1956) and 100th anniversary (2006). It also hosts the annual Emden Rund regatta, which features a traditional lantern boat parade (Lampionfahrt). A foundation (Stiftung) was established to support the club's financial future.
