Overview

Bodegas Lustau is a Sherry winery based in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, founded in 1896 by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo. It began as an almacenista and later commercialized its wines and brandies under its own brands, including Papirusa, Jarana, Escuadrilla, Emperatriz Eugenia and Cinta de Oro. In 1990 it became part of the Luis Caballero group.

History

Bodegas Lustau was founded in 1896 by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo, who cultivated vines on his estate Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza and aged wines at the vineyard house, selling them to large exporting bodegas as an almacenista. In 1931 his daughter, María Ruiz-Berdejo Alberti, acquired a bodega on Callejón de Asta, moving the aging of their wines to Jerez. In the 1940s, Don Emilio Lustau Ortega, husband of María, moved the bodega to the old Santiago neighborhood in the historic center of Jerez de la Frontera, within buildings that formed part of the historic Arab walls. In 1945 Emilio Lustau moved from being an almacenista to commercializing his wines and brandies under his own brands, creating brands such as Papirusa, Jarana, Escuadrilla, Emperatriz Eugenia and Cinta de Oro. Only five years later the first exports arrived. From the 1980s, under the direction of Rafael Balao, Lustau became one of the most innovative companies in Jerez; in that decade the Solera Familiar range was born, the now legendary Almacenista range was created, and Añadas elaborations began. In 1988, Lustau introduced a new bottle for its wines, an elegant and exclusive brand bottle that distinguished Lustau from other Jerez bodegas. In 1990, Bodegas Lustau passed into the hands of the known spirits company Luis Caballero.
