Emmaus UK is a nationwide movement of charities supporting people to move on from homelessness. Through its communities and social enterprises, it helps people rebuild their lives with dignity, purpose and belonging, providing a place to call home, training and work opportunities as part of a tailored package of support. The first Emmaus in the UK opened in 1991, and there are now 28 communities spread across the UK. Its social enterprises include shops selling vintage, upcycled and preloved items.
History
The history of Emmaus started in France shortly after the Second World War. Emmaus started in France in 1949, when homelessness was a significant problem. After the first Emmaus community was created in Neuilly-Plaisance, in the eastern suburbs of Paris, many more communities opened in France and the Emmaus movement grew across Europe, in the Americas and in Asia. The growth of the movement gave rise to the gradual development of a network of organisations that met in Bern, Switzerland, in 1969 to adopt the Universal Manifesto, the founding text of the Emmaus movement. Emmaus International was set up in 1971. Emmaus came to the UK in the early 1990s, starting in 1989 when Cambridge businessman Selwyn Image was volunteering at a soup and sandwich shelter in the city. The first Emmaus in the UK opened in 1991 and there are now 28 communities spread across the UK.
