Overview

En Liten Øl (ELØ) is a Norwegian craft brewery based in Fitjar municipality on the island of Stord, in the Sunnhordland coastal region of Vestland county. Founded in November 2015, the brewery produced its first beer, MARMOR Gyllen Pilsner, in August 2016. Until a dedicated brewery facility was completed in March 2017 at Port Steingard on Kråko, the beer was brewed in Arendal. The brewery describes its location as part of a landscape shaped by geological diversity, ice, water and weather, and positions its beers as handcrafted from first-class natural ingredients, brewed at the right temperatures and over the necessary time. En Liten Øl produces a core range of beers including MARMOR (4.7%), an unfiltered light lager with low bitterness and a distinct aroma from Saaz hops; GYLLEN PILSNER, the brewery's first beer and one of its bestsellers; and KIS (4.7%), an unfiltered pale ale brewed with barley and wheat malt and hopped with Sorachi Ace, Mosaic and Simcoe. The brewery has been transitioning its packaging from glass bottles to aluminium cans, a move it says reduces environmental impact, lowers transport and recycling costs, and preserves beer quality better. Topas and Marmor have received new can designs, while Kråkesølv continues to be bottled and sold in glass for the time being. All new cans are connected to the Infinitum deposit-return system. In September 2021, a new canning line was completed and production shifted from glass bottles to aluminium cans. In autumn 2021, ELØ entered a collaboration for production and bottling with the soft drink producer Ole Vaagen Mineralvannfabrikk. The brewery sells its beer in grocery stores and restaurants across Vestland and parts of Rogaland, as well as through a café attached to the brewery and at Heiane on Stord. In 2020, 25 percent of beer volume was sold at the local brewery café, 20 percent to grocery stores in Sunnhordland, 13 percent at Vinmonopolet stores nationwide, and around 20 percent via national wholesalers. Distribution in Vestland (formerly Hordaland) is handled through Spesialgrossisten, and nationally through Asko. En Liten Øl has received recognition for its beers. At the Bergen Whisky & Beer Festival 2017, its Lys Ale - Kis was named Best Norwegian produced beer, and at Bergen Ølfestival 2017 it was named Best festival beer. The brewery remains a private, independent craft producer focused on the Sunnhordland region and the Norwegian market.

History

En Liten Øl (ELØ) was founded in November 2015 as a Norwegian craft brewery in Fitjar municipality on the island of Stord, in the Sunnhordland region of Vestland county. The brewery's first product, MARMOR Gyllen Pilsner, was delivered in August 2016. Until a new brewery facility was completed in March 2017 in the cottage area of Port Steingard on Kråko, the beer was brewed in Arendal. The brewery describes its home region as a coastal area shaped by a unique geological diversity of rocks and minerals, formed over time into natural beauty by ice, water and weather, where hardworking people enjoy their well-earned leisure with good food and drink. From Port Steingard, the handcraft brewery creates what it calls great taste experiences, with beer made from first-class natural ingredients and good craftsmanship, at the right temperatures and over the necessary time. In September 2021, a new canning line was completed and production shifted from glass bottles to aluminium cans. The transition from glass to aluminium was already well underway, with the brewery stating that soon all its classics would be available in cans. The change meant that Topas and Marmor received entirely new can designs, while Kråkesølv would continue to be bottled and sold in glass for the time being. By switching from glass bottles to aluminium cans, the brewery reduces environmental impact: lower packaging volume reduces costs related to transport and recycling, and is both more efficient and space-saving. In addition, the quality of the beer is preserved much better in cans compared to bottles. All new cans are also connected to deposit-return schemes through Infinitum. In sum, the brewery believes this change is very beneficial for the customer, the environment and itself. In autumn 2021, ELØ entered a collaboration for production and bottling with the soft drink producer Ole Vaagen Mineralvannfabrikk. The brewery sells its beer in grocery stores and restaurants throughout Vestland and parts of Rogaland. It also has sales at a café attached to the brewery and at Heiane on Stord. En Liten Øl has received awards for its beers. At the Bergen Whisky & Beer Festival 2017, its Lys Ale - Kis was named Best Norwegian produced beer. At Bergen Ølfestival 2017, it was named Best festival beer. The brewery remains an independent private craft producer focused on the Sunnhordland region and the Norwegian market.
