History
The ENAC Foundation was created in 2012 by the École nationale de l'aviation civile to promote scientific and public-interest activities in aviation, aerospace and aeronautics. Its creation built on ENAC's broader educational, professional and community activities and gave those activities a dedicated foundation structure for scholarships, research support, partnerships and public engagement. The foundation's background includes the first aeronautical book fair organized by ENAC and its alumni association in 2009. The event represented an early effort to connect the school and its community with the wider public through aviation-related knowledge and culture. In December 2010, ENAC became one of the International Civil Aviation Organization's aviation security training centres. Although that designation preceded the foundation, it demonstrated the institution's growing international significance in aviation training and helped establish a context for later international and research-oriented foundation activities. Following its establishment, the ENAC Foundation awarded its first scholarships in 2014. The scholarships were designed to promote international mobility, supporting the international dimension of aviation education and helping students obtain experience in other countries or academic environments. This became one of the clearest expressions of the foundation's educational mission. In 2015, the foundation supported the creation of its first research chair, dedicated to unmanned aerial vehicles. The chair was established in partnership with Ineo, Cofely and Sagem. Its creation showed how the foundation could serve as an intermediary between ENAC's academic and research capabilities and companies seeking to contribute to emerging aviation technologies. Unmanned aerial vehicles were a significant research area because they raised questions involving aircraft technology, safety, regulation, airspace integration and future operations. Since 2017, the foundation has been supported by GIFAS, the French aerospace-industry federation. This support connected the foundation more closely with France's aerospace industrial community and reinforced its role as a platform for cooperation among education, research and industry. The available public reference material does not provide a complete account of the foundation's legal structure, current governance, annual finances, full scholarship portfolio or all subsequent research activities. Its documented history nevertheless shows a consistent purpose: using philanthropic and partnership-based mechanisms to strengthen aviation and aerospace education, encourage international mobility, support applied research and promote the public value of aeronautical knowledge.
