Overview

Enapter is a German technology company whose core technology is the patented Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolyzer. The company states that more than 12,000 Enapter AEM Stacks produce green hydrogen worldwide, and describes itself as the pioneer and market leader of commercialized AEM Electrolyzers. Its product portfolio includes the EL 4, AEM Flex 120 and AEM Nexus electrolyzer systems.

History

Enapter was founded in 2017 when Sebastian-Justus Schmidt acquired the Italian firm ACTA and renamed it Enapter. In 2018 he and co-founders Jan-Justus Schmidt and Vaitea Cowan grew the company, hiring staff in Italy and software developers in Saint Petersburg. A Berlin office and a new serial production facility in Italy opened in 2019. In 2020 Enapter launched the third-generation EL 2.1 AEM Electrolyzer, hit the stock market with a reverse acquisition, and announced plans for its first mass-production facility, the Enapter Campus. By 2021 the company reached 165 employees and 140 customers in 36 countries, opened an office in Saerbeck, Germany, expanded its Pisa offices, announced its AEM Multicore megawatt-scale electrolyzer, and was named an Earthshot Prize winner. In 2022 it launched the EL 4.0 next-generation AEM Electrolyzer and set a production record in Q4 2022, delivering 1,200 AEM electrolyzers of the latest EL 4.0 generation.
