Overview

Energeia is a Czech independent non-profit organisation (obecně prospěšná společnost) founded in 2003 by Marek Černocký. It operates charitable, educational, media and cultural activities and services, with the stated aim of contributing to the development of civil society, with an emphasis on a culture of dialogue and ethical conduct. The organisation respects the value of the individual and honours life in all its stages. Its activities are united by a common direction: to know the world in context, to understand oneself and life, the world and its meaning, because every one of us matters. Among its flagship programmes is home-based paediatric palliative care, providing health and social care at home to children with serious illness from birth to 19 years of age. It is a field service operating in the Pardubice, Hradec Králové, Central Bohemian and Vysočina regions. Another key initiative is Kontexty humanity, an open educational platform connecting knowledge in broader philosophical, cultural, historical, ethical, artistic and religious contexts. The en centrum counselling and mediation centre offers psychological help to manage or prevent difficult life situations, and mediation provides a space for resolving disagreements, disputes and conflicts. Family conferences enable families to resolve complex situations of children through their own efforts; the Centre for the Implementation and Development of Family Conferences is a joint project of the organisations Amalthea and energeia. The organisation also supports an active approach to life, especially for seniors, in spending their free time, and organises lectures, courses and conferences, including the educational course Žít s respektem (Respektovat a být respektován). Energeia's funding model is distinctive: it generates ecologically clean energy through a hydroelectric power plant, which together with donations creates a stable source of financing for its social activities. The organisation was created as a non-profit after Černocký's previous project, the magazine Omega, failed due to weak financing, which led him to want to create a non-profit project. For initial capital he, together with a sponsor, raised about 1.7 million dollars, after which he took a bank loan against these funds. The organisation's first project was the first children's hospice in the Czech Republic, under construction as of 2014. Energeia became an investor in a small hydroelectric power plant project on the Elbe in the town of Štětí; the project, costing about 900 million Czech korunas, began with the participation of Metrostav a.s. and Zakládání staveb, a.s. In 2015 the power plant with two turbines of 5.8 MW each was connected to the grid. As of 2013 the organisation had three partners: the Klíček Foundation (cooperation on the children's hospice project), private entrepreneur engineer Miroslav Lekeš, and E.ON, with which a contract was signed for the purchase of all the company's electricity for 22 years of the station's operation. The name is based on the ancient Greek word ἐνέργεια, intended to symbolise the driving and struggling force for the movement of things.
