Overview
EnergieWerk Ilg GmbH is an Austrian renewable-energy company based in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg, and part of the Ilg family's group of businesses. It grew out of a traditional agricultural holding established by Ulrich Ilg in 1937 in the Hatlerstraße in Dornbirn, which passed to Tobias Ilg in 2000 in the third generation. In 2003 Tobias Ilg founded the sole proprietorship Tobias Ilg Transporte und Holzschlägerung, covering timber and wood-chip transport, logging and problem felling, and wood-chip production and trading. The decisive step into energy came in 2005 with the founding of BioGasHof GesbR and the construction of the first biogas plant in Dornbirn-Vordere Fängen, which today supplies green electricity for around 350 households. The company positions itself as an innovative energy service provider offering an alternative to gas, oil and nuclear power. Its core activity is the generation of renewable energy from regional biomass, complemented by solar and wind energy. In 2006 the first biomass heating plant was built in the Hatlerstraße, with its district-heating network and electrical output expanded several times over the years. In 2014 the Energiezentrale Hatlerdorf was added, a wood-fired power plant that for the first time produced not only heat and green electricity but also high-quality plant charcoal (Pflanzenkohle). In 2019 the Energiezentrale in Stöcken was built. EnergieWerk Ilg operates under the umbrella of the family's Biomassehof activities, which also include climate-protection initiatives such as climate-friendly concrete, mobility and carbon capture. The company states that climate protection is at the centre of its corporate culture and that it remains deeply rooted in agricultural values. It supports Vorarlberg's goal of energy autonomy by 2050 through regional projects and sustainable climate-protection measures, an effort publicly acknowledged by Vorarlberg's governor Markus Wallner and Dornbirn's mayor Andrea Kaufmann, who described Tobias and Bernhard Ilg as pioneers of sustainability and renewable energy. The business is privately held by the Ilg family and is not listed on a stock exchange.
History
The origins of EnergieWerk Ilg lie in agriculture. In 1937 Altlandeshauptmann Ulrich Ilg established a farm in the Hatlerstraße in Dornbirn. The farm was passed down within the family, and in 2000 Tobias Ilg took it over in the third generation from his parents, who had themselves inherited it from Ulrich Ilg. In 2003 Tobias Ilg founded the sole proprietorship Tobias Ilg Transporte und Holzschlägerung, which today covers transport of all kinds, logging and problem felling, as well as wood-chip production and trading. The move into energy began in 2005 with the founding of BioGasHof GesbR and the start of construction of the first biogas plant in Dornbirn-Vordere Fängen. That plant today supplies green electricity for around 350 households. In 2006 the first biomass heating plant was erected in the Hatlerstraße; its district-heating network and electrical output were expanded several times over the years. In 2014 the company added the Energiezentrale Hatlerdorf, a wood-fired power plant in which, for the first time, high-quality plant charcoal was produced alongside heat and green electricity. In 2019 the Energiezentrale in Stöcken was built. Under the EnergieWerk Ilg name, the company focuses on renewable energy generation and presents itself as an innovative energy service provider offering an alternative to gas, oil and nuclear power. Its aim is to strengthen the local economy with regional biomass, secure regional value creation and actively contribute to climate protection, with solar and wind energy complementing the sustainable portfolio. The company supports Vorarlberg's goal of energy autonomy by 2050 through regional projects and sustainable climate-protection measures. It operates within the broader Ilg family business group, whose Biomassehof activities also include climate-protection fields such as climate-friendly concrete, mobility and carbon capture. The business remains privately held by the Ilg family.
