Overview

Entreprise Nationale des Industries Électroniques (ENIE) is an Algerian state-owned enterprise specialised in the manufacture of audio and video products and electronic components. It is headquartered in Sidi Bel Abbès and is described as a leader of Algeria's electronics industry. The company was created in 1982 following the restructuring of Sonelec, which had grouped several subsidiaries since its own creation in 1978. In 1989 it was converted into a société par actions (joint-stock company). ENIE's product range spans televisions of all categories, smartphones, touch tablets, desktop and laptop computers, motherboards, printed circuit boards, satellite receivers, home cinema systems, video projectors, photovoltaic solar panels, video surveillance systems, dynamic display systems, alarm control units and access-control systems. Its workforce fell from 6,000 employees in 1994 to 1,870 in 2009 as a result of successive recovery plans and the closure of several production units. The company went through a severe financial crisis that nearly caused its bankruptcy and led to the closure of production units at Ras El Ma in 2006 and Telagh in 2008. The Algerian government provided financial support for the acquisition of new production equipment, the launch of new product ranges and staff training. A presidential decree in 2009 established within the company a public industrial and commercial establishment under the economic sector of the People's National Army, to set up an electronic systems platform at the Sidi Bel Abbès plant. In 2015 ENIE began producing solar panels with a capacity of 3 megawatts. A shareholder pact was signed in 2017 between the public group Elec El-Djazair, through its subsidiary ENIE, the Groupe industriel des ciments d'Algérie and the French industrial group Schneider Electric for the construction of a plant in Sidi Bel Abbès producing low-, medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment, control cabinets, inverters for photovoltaic stations and other equipment for the energy sector. In 2018 the electronics integration plant at Sidi Bel Abbès, renovated after a fire in 2015, was recommissioned to manufacture electronic payment terminals and satellite communication reception equipment for Algeria's Alcomsat-1 satellite. In 2021 the industry minister announced the restart of three ENIE units: one for recycling electronic and computer waste, one in partnership with the public group Agrodiv in agri-food, and one economic interest group for medical equipment and supplies. On 14 December 2021 ENIE signed a joint-venture contract with the Italian company Fimer to create Fimer Algérie, specialised in manufacturing inverters, switching units for solar plants and control instruments for the photovoltaic energy industry. In 2022 the company began producing digital tablets and charging carts under a contract with the Algerian Ministry of National Education for distribution to primary schools.

History

ENIE was created in 1982 following the restructuring of Sonelec, which had grouped several subsidiaries since its own creation in 1978. In 1989 the company was converted into a société par actions (joint-stock company). Its head office is located in Sidi Bel Abbès. Its workforce declined from 6,000 employees in 1994 to 1,870 in 2009 as a result of numerous recovery plans and the closure of several production units. As a leader of Algeria's electronics industry, the company experienced a severe financial crisis that nearly caused its bankruptcy and led to the closure of several production units: Ras El Ma in 2006 and Telagh in 2008. The Algerian government put in place financial aid for the acquisition of new production equipment, the launch of new product ranges and staff training. By presidential decree No. 09-223 of 29 June 2009, published in the official journal, a public establishment of an industrial and commercial character was created within the company, under the economic sector of the People's National Army, for the establishment of an electronic systems platform at the Sidi Bel Abbès plant. In 2015 the company launched into the production of solar panels with a capacity of 3 megawatts. A shareholder pact was signed in 2017 between the public group Elec El-Djazair, through its subsidiary ENIE, the Groupe industriel des ciments d'Algérie and the French industrial group of international dimension Schneider Electric for the construction of a plant in Sidi Bel Abbès that would produce low-, medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment, control cabinets, inverters for photovoltaic stations and various other equipment intended for the energy sector. In 2018 the electronics integration plant at Sidi Bel Abbès, renovated after the fire that ravaged it in 2015, was recommissioned by the Minister of Industry and Mines, Youcef Yousfi, and the Minister of Post, Telecommunications, Technologies and Digital, Houda-Imane Faraoun. This unit was to handle the manufacture of electronic payment terminals and satellite communication reception equipment for the operation of the Algerian satellite Alcomsat-1, under an agreement signed between the industry and mines sector and the telecommunications, technologies and digital sector. In 2021 the Minister of Industry Ahmed Zeghdar announced that three units of ENIE would be restarted. The first unit is specialised in recycling waste from electronic appliances and computer machines; the second unit would be a partnership between ENIE and the public group Agrodiv active in agri-food; and the third unit would be an economic interest group specialised in the manufacture of medical equipment and its supplies. On 14 December 2021 the company signed a joint-venture contract with the Italian company Fimer with a view to creating Fimer Algérie, specialised in the manufacture of inverters, switching units for solar plants and control instruments for the photovoltaic energy industry. In 2022 the company launched into the production of digital tablets and charging carts, following a contract signed with the Algerian Ministry of National Education, to distribute them to primary schools.
