Overview

Enishi Shobo Co., Ltd. (えにし書房) is a small Japanese publishing house established on June 4, 2014, by Takayuki Tsukada, a former employee of the publisher Sairyusha. It is a so-called "one-person publisher" (ひとり出版社), meaning it is essentially run by a single individual. The company is headquartered in Kudanminami, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and focuses on books in the fields of history, humanities and social sciences, hobbies, and subculture. Its stated goal is to continue publishing for 30 years and to release 500 titles. Distribution and settlement of its publications are handled by Transview, with Taiyosha as the distributor. The company's first two titles were released on August 6, 2014. It also collaborates with the record label Guramokurabu on a book series. The official website states that all information about its books—cover images, bibliographic data, and content descriptions—may be freely used.

History

Enishi Shobo was founded on June 4, 2014, by Takayuki Tsukada in Kudanminami, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Tsukada had joined Sairyusha in 1996, where he worked in distribution sales for about ten years before being transferred to the editorial department. He also served as sales manager and general affairs manager while continuing editorial work, and later became editorial department manager. After leaving Sairyusha, he established Enishi Shobo as a one-person publisher. The company began publishing on August 6, 2014, with two titles: Yosuke Naito's "Korean War: Reading the Origins of Modern Korean History through Postal Media" and Kazunari Hironaka's "Telling the War: Eight Testimonies from East Mikawa, China, Siberia, the South, and the Mainland." Thereafter, it aimed to publish roughly two books every two months. On November 5, 2014, it launched the "Guramokurabu Series" in collaboration with the record label Guramokurabu, led by archive producer and prewar record culture researcher Toru Hori. The first title in the series was Masanori Tsujita's "Patriotism and Records: The Phantom Great Nagoya Military Song and the Asahi Phonograph Company," a media-mix work tied to a compilation album of restored SP record recordings released by Guramokurabu on October 19, 2014, and its predecessor "Great Nagoya Military Song" released on December 8, 2012. On December 14, 2014, Enishi Shobo, together with four other publishers (Kyowakoku, Kurakudo, Korokara, and Transview), placed a five-column book advertisement in the morning edition of the Mainichi Shimbun. The company's official website declares that all information about its books may be freely used.
