Overview

EnliteAI is an Austrian applied-artificial-intelligence company headquartered in Vienna, best known today as the developer of FLEX, an AI-powered grid optimization platform for transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs). The company was founded in Vienna in 2017 and has since evolved through several distinct phases — from a market-intelligence product, to an applied-AI consultancy and venture studio, to a focused energy-technology product company operating under the EnliteAI Energy banner. EnliteAI's early years were spent building AI systems for large enterprises. The company worked with clients including Audi, A1, Red Bull and the City of Vienna, and drafted the City of Vienna's AI strategy — described as the first such strategy of any Austrian municipality. During this period the company also built and spun out products: Detekt, a GeoAI product for road infrastructure, went from seed round to acquisition by Cyclomedia, the global mobile-mapping leader, in under two years (2023–2025); and Maze, a reinforcement-learning framework, was released as open source and won the international L2RPN grid-control competition in 2022. The energy work that began with research collaborations grew into FLEX, EnliteAI's flagship product. FLEX turns existing grid data into secure, explainable operating decisions, helping operators connect renewables faster, relieve congestion and defer avoidable grid reinforcement. Its core promise is that the human operator always decides: the system detects a constraint, analyses options, and presents ranked recommendations — for example non-costly switching actions or activation of contracted flexibility — each validated as N-1 secure. The company positions this as "less copper, more code." EnliteAI Energy is based in Vienna's inner city at Wollzeile 24, and works with a multidisciplinary team spanning reinforcement learning, power systems and software engineering. It has customer engagements with Austrian DSOs including Wiener Netze and Netze Burgenland, and has published research with European operators such as TenneT, RTE and ENEL. The company is active in EU-backed research, participating in Horizon Europe consortia including AI4RealNet and AI-EFFECT, and publishes at venues such as IEEE, ACM e-Energy and NeurIPS workshops. Its investor base includes Speedinvest, Breeze Invest, Floud Ventures and Fra Mauro GmbH, and its partner ecosystem spans consulting and delivery partners (KPMG, PwC, Beyond Technologies, 4ward Energy), grid-platform ecosystem partners (envelio, Plexigrid, elergi) and research and grid operators. Today EnliteAI describes itself as "one thing: EnliteAI Energy, the team behind FLEX." The earlier venture-studio chapter is over — its products were sold, shipped or open-sourced — and the company has consolidated around grid-optimization software for the European energy transition.

History

EnliteAI was founded in Vienna in 2017. Its first commercial product was Skope, a market-intelligence offering. The company's own account of this period is candid: it learned that it was better at building AI than at selling analytics, and pivoted toward applied-AI work for enterprise clients. Over the following years it delivered AI projects for companies including Audi, A1 and Red Bull, as well as for the City of Vienna — for which it drafted the city's AI strategy, described as the first of any Austrian municipality. This consultancy era, working with a dozen or more ATX and DAX names, taught the team how research becomes something an enterprise actually runs. The company then moved into building products of its own, operating in part as a DeepTech venture studio. Two products defined this chapter. Detekt, a GeoAI product for road infrastructure, went from seed round to acquisition by Cyclomedia — the global mobile-mapping leader — in under two years, spanning 2023 to 2025. Maze, a reinforcement-learning framework, was released as open source in 2021 as MazeRL and won the international L2RPN grid-control competition in 2022. The L2RPN competition work marked the beginning of EnliteAI's engagement with power-grid control as a research domain. That energy research grew into FLEX, an AI-powered grid optimization platform for transmission and distribution system operators. FLEX turns existing grid data into secure, explainable operating decisions, helping operators connect renewables faster, relieve congestion and defer avoidable reinforcement. The product's design principle is that the operator always decides: FLEX detects a grid constraint, analyses options, and presents ranked recommendations — such as non-costly switching actions or activation of contracted flexibility — each validated as N-1 secure. The company frames the value proposition as "less copper, more code." EnliteAI Energy has customer engagements with Austrian distribution system operators including Wiener Netze and Netze Burland, and has published research results with European transmission operators such as TenneT and ENEL, as well as RTE. It participates in EU-backed research through Horizon Europe consortia including AI4RealNet and AI-EFFECT, and publishes at IEEE, ACM e-Energy and NeurIPS workshops. The company is based in Vienna's inner city at Wollzeile 24, and its team combines reinforcement-learning researchers, power-systems engineers and software engineers. By the mid-2020s the company had consolidated around its energy business. Its own about page states that "the company is one thing: EnliteAI Energy, the team behind FLEX," and that the venture-studio chapter is over — its products were sold, shipped or open-sourced. Detekt was acquired by Cyclomedia in 2025, described as the company's first portfolio exit. Investors include Speedinvest, Breeze Invest, Floud Ventures and Fra Mauro GmbH, and the partner ecosystem spans consulting and delivery partners (KPMG, PwC, Beyond Technologies, 4ward Energy), grid-platform ecosystem partners (envelio, Plexigrid, elergi) and research and grid operators.
