Overview
Enrahonar. Quaderns de Filosofia is an academic journal published by the Department of Philosophy of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). It was founded in 1981, thirteen years after the creation of the UAB, as a vehicle for the dissemination of ideas and debates in philosophy and neighbouring disciplines. Its stated aim was to continue the tradition of Catalan philosophy that had been curtailed during the Franco dictatorship, while also bringing it into contemporary international debates. The Catalan name "Enrahonar" was chosen to make explicit this will to "raonar" (from "raó", "reason") — that is, to reason. The journal was created with the participation of the professors who founded the UAB Department of Philosophy, including Josep Calsamiglia, who was its first director, as well as José Montserrat Torrents, Pere Lluís i Font, Octavi Fullat, Joaquim Maristany, Victoria Camps, Magí Cadevall i Soler and Josep Manuel Udina. It also counted on the support and participation of Javier Muguerza, Manuel Reyes Mato, Ramón Valdés and Esperanza Guisán. Its early issues reflected the various philosophy congresses and meetings of the 1980s and bear witness to efforts to recover the Catalan philosophical tradition and to foster relations with the Faculty of Philosophy of the Universitat de Barcelona and the Col·legi de Filosofia. A concern for the teaching of philosophy and the humanities has also been present from the outset, and is especially evident in some volumes devoted to the philosophy of education. After the death of Josep Calsamiglia in 1982, the journal was directed successively by Josep Montserrat Torrents, Victoria Camps, Gerard Vilar, Marta Tafalla and Jaume Mensa. Since 2018 it has been directed by David Casacuberta. In its desire to foster international dialogue, Enrahonar has published articles by Jürgen Habermas, Ágnes Heller, Christoph Menke, Alexander García-Düttmann, Seyla Benhabib, Cristina Lafont and Thomas Pogge, among others. Today Enrahonar publishes original scientific articles that must undergo a peer-review process, as well as book reviews. It publishes mainly in Catalan, Spanish and English, but also in other Romance languages. It combines the dissemination of Catalan philosophy with an interest in current philosophical discussions in other languages and cultures. It has published several monographic issues on Catalan philosophy, dealing with themes such as the exile of Catalan thinkers during Francoism, medieval and modern Catalan philosophy, and twentieth-century Catalan philosophy. Regarding current philosophical discussions, it has devoted monographic issues to, among others, Adorno, Heidegger, Nietzsche, Rawls, the philosophy of education, aesthetics, the aesthetics of nature, philosophy and literature, the philosophy of human rights, contemporary German philosophy and Eastern philosophy.
