Overview
Entertainment One Distribution was the distribution-oriented business associated with Entertainment One, the Canadian entertainment company that developed from a music and home-entertainment distributor into an international film, television, and content group. Its activities included acquiring, marketing, licensing, and releasing films and television programs across theatrical, home-entertainment, broadcast, and digital channels. Distribution operated through a network of regional businesses and labels, including operations connected with Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Spain, Germany, and the Benelux region. The business emerged from Entertainment One's expansion beyond music distribution. The underlying company began in 1973 as Canadian music distributor Records on Wheels Limited and later became ROW Entertainment. After acquiring Koch Entertainment in 2005, the company broadened its presence in music and home entertainment. It adopted the Entertainment One identity as it pursued acquisitions in film distribution, television production, and international content sales. Important additions included Seville Pictures and Contender Entertainment Group in 2007, RCV Entertainment in 2008, Hopscotch in Australia in 2011, Alliance Films in 2013, and Phase 4 Films in 2014. These transactions expanded the company's ability to acquire rights, distribute independent films, and manage regional release strategies. Entertainment One's distribution activities were closely linked to production and rights ownership. The company handled or negotiated output and distribution arrangements with outside producers and studios, while also building its own film and television production capabilities. It distributed content through theatrical releases, physical home media, broadcast licensing, and later digital and ancillary channels. The revived Momentum Pictures label served specialized theatrical and related distribution purposes in the United States, while regional subsidiaries and partnerships were used to manage local market requirements. In 2017, Entertainment One consolidated its film and television studios as it shifted emphasis from acquiring large libraries and output agreements toward developing and producing content. Distribution nevertheless remained central because the company's business model depended on monetizing rights internationally and across multiple platforms. In 2019, regional arrangements changed substantially: the Australian business entered a distribution agreement with Universal Pictures, the Benelux operation became WW Entertainment, and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment assumed home-media distribution for eOne titles in several territories. Hasbro acquired Entertainment One on December 30, 2019, for approximately US$4 billion. Under Hasbro, eOne increasingly supported content based on Hasbro properties, while Hasbro retained responsibility for consumer products, licensing, and merchandising. The parent company subsequently reduced parts of eOne's broader entertainment infrastructure. Its music division was sold to Blackstone in 2021, and theatrical distribution operations were closed in selected territories, including Canada and Spain in 2022 and the United Kingdom in 2023. These changes reduced the scope of the standalone distribution network. Hasbro announced in 2022 that it intended to sell most of eOne's film and television assets while retaining family and brand assets connected with properties such as Peppa Pig. Lionsgate acquired the relevant eOne entertainment assets in a transaction announced in 2023 and completed on December 27, 2023. The acquired operations were reorganized: eOne Films was placed within Lionsgate Films, eOne Television was combined with Lionsgate Television, and unscripted production assets were moved into Lionsgate Alternative Television. Lionsgate later spun its film and television business into Lionsgate Studios in May 2024. Because the historical distri…
History
Entertainment One Distribution traces its business background to Records on Wheels Limited, a Canadian music distributor established on June 1, 1973. The company later became part of ROW Entertainment after the acquisition of CD Plus and the integration of related music and home-entertainment activities. Darren Throop, who had joined through CD Plus's acquisition of Urban Sound Exchange, became a leading executive and eventually president and chief executive officer. The acquisition of Koch Entertainment in 2005 broadened the business into United States music distribution and home-entertainment publishing. In 2007, the company accepted an investment backed by Marwyn Investment Management, moved toward the Entertainment One identity, and listed on London's Alternative Investment Market. Its strategy then expanded rapidly into film and television rights. Seville Pictures and Contender Entertainment Group were acquired in 2007, followed by RCV Entertainment in the Benelux region in 2008. During the same period, the company added television-production and international-distribution capabilities through acquisitions including Blueprint, Barna-Alper, and Oasis International. The company used the abbreviated eOne name during part of this expansion and later returned to the Entertainment One branding. It acquired Australia's Hopscotch in 2011 and completed the purchase of Alliance Films in January 2013. The Alliance transaction materially increased eOne's film-distribution reach and gave it Canadian rights connected with a number of independent and studio suppliers. Further acquisitions included Phase 4 Films, Paperny Entertainment, and Force Four Entertainment in 2014. eOne also made investments in interactive, scripted, unscripted, and production businesses, reflecting an effort to control or participate in content at more stages of its commercial life cycle. In the United States, eOne strengthened its distribution and production position by acquiring a majority stake in The Mark Gordon Company in 2015 and the remaining interest in 2018. It revived Momentum Pictures for specialized theatrical releases and entered arrangements with Orion Pictures and other production partners. The company also invested in Amblin Partners and acquired or invested in several music and unscripted businesses. These moves linked distribution with production financing, rights ownership, and international exploitation rather than treating distribution as a stand-alone logistics function. In 2017, eOne consolidated its film and television studios and repositioned itself toward production and owned or controlled content. Regional distribution arrangements continued to evolve. The Benelux operation became WW Entertainment in 2019, while eOne's Australian business entered a Universal Pictures agreement covering theatrical, home-video, and co-distribution rights. A separate home-media arrangement with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment covered eOne titles in a range of territories after the earlier agreement with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment ended. Hasbro completed its acquisition of Entertainment One on December 30, 2019. The transaction made eOne a wholly owned Hasbro subsidiary and changed the strategic role of its distribution infrastructure. eOne was increasingly expected to develop and distribute content related to Hasbro properties, while Hasbro managed consumer products, licensing, and merchandising. The company reduced its wider entertainment footprint during this period. Its music operations were sold to Blackstone in 2021, and its theatrical distribution operations in selected countries were closed in 2022 and 2023. In the United Kingdom, distribution operations were also closed in 2023 with associated staff reductions. Hasbro announced in November 2022 that it would sell most of eOne's film and television assets while retaining the family and brand operations. Lionsgate was selected as the buyer, and the transaction closed on December 27, 2023. The former eOne businesses were divided among Lionsgate Films, Lionsgate Television, and Lionsgate Alternative Television. In May 2024, Lionsgate separated its film and television operations into Lionsgate Studios. Consequently, Entertainment One Distribution is best understood as a historical distribution identity and business function whose assets and personnel were absorbed into successor Lionsgate organizations rather than as a clearly independent current company.
