Overview

Éditions Entremonde is an independent, non-profit publishing house founded in Geneva in 2008. Organized as an association, it is represented in France by the association Entremonde France. The catalogue deliberately mixes communist and anarchist authors, theoretical works and literature, reflecting both the heterogeneous composition of its editorial committee and a stated choice to transcend ideology, in the spirit of the situationists. Karl Marx appears alongside Michel Bakounine, and various currents of the communist left (council communism, operaismo, communization) and anarchism (anarcho-communism, insurrectionary anarchism) are represented. Entremonde is also the principal publisher of Italian writer Nanni Balestrini and has reissued Solomon Northup's famous slave narrative Twelve Years a Slave. It published the first French edition of Jan Tschichold's The New Typography and Josef Müller-Brockmann's essential manual Grid Systems in Graphic Design. The house describes itself as making publishing a focus of systemic dysfunction, throwing its 'little paper missiles' at the bourgeoisie. Its editorial line combines rigorous political theory with attention to design and translation.

History

Éditions Entremonde was founded in Geneva in 2008 as an independent publishing house organized as a non-profit association. In France, it is represented by the association Entremonde France. From its beginnings, the house adopted a deliberately heterogeneous editorial line, mixing communist and anarchist authors, theoretical works and literature. Asked about this mix of sometimes opposed political tendencies, its members explained: 'The publication of works by authors assigned to opposing political tendencies is the result of two factors: first, it reflects the heterogeneous composition of the editorial committee; second, it is a choice, like the situationists in their time, of transcending ideology.' Thus Karl Marx appears alongside Michel Bakounine, and various currents of the communist left (council communism, operaismo, communization) and anarchism (anarcho-communism, insurrectionary anarchism) are represented. Entremonde is also the principal publisher of Italian writer Nanni Balestrini and has reissued Twelve Years a Slave, Solomon Northup's famous slave narrative. It published the first French edition of Jan Tschichold's The New Typography and Josef Müller-Brockmann's essential manual Grid Systems in Graphic Design. Notable publications include Nanni Balestrini's La Violence illustrée (translated from Italian by Pascale Budillon Puma, Geneva, 2011, 150 pages) and Abraham Léon's La Conception matérialiste de la question juive (Entremonde, 'Rupture' collection, Geneva, 2018). In co-edition, it published Silvia Federici's Caliban et la sorcière. Femmes, corps et accumulation primitive (Marseille/Geneva-Paris, Éditions Senonevero/Éditions Entremonde, 2014, 459 pages). The house has continued to publish and attract media attention, with coverage in Philosophie magazine (3 July 2025), France Culture and Le Point culture (10 March 2025), and Le Courrier (24 January 2024). Its editorial statement describes making publishing a focus of systemic dysfunction and throwing its 'little paper missiles' at the bourgeoisie.
