Overview

Entsorgung Dortmund GmbH (EDG) is a municipal waste management company based in Dortmund, Germany. Founded in 1991 and commencing operations in January 1992, it was created from the conversion of the city's street cleaning office into a private-law company. EDG is owned 51% by the City of Dortmund and 49% by Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG. Its core responsibilities include waste disposal for private households, street cleaning, and winter services. Over the past three decades, its range of services has been systematically expanded. EDG serves the city of Dortmund and parts of the surrounding region. It operates six recycling centers, a furniture exchange, and a fleet of around 300 vehicles. The company employs approximately 1,100 people within the EDG Group, with nearly 990 in the core company. Annually, it handles around 9.4 million container empties, 1 million paper bin empties, 19,400 bulky waste orders, and 364,000 deliveries to recycling centers. It cleans about 320,000 kilometers of streets and paths each year. EDG is part of a corporate group that includes subsidiaries such as Dortmunder Recycling GmbH (DOREG), Dortmunder Mineralstoffverwertungs GmbH (DOMIG), Dortmunder Gesellschaft für Abfall mbH (DOGA), Welge Entsorgung GmbH, MHB Betriebsführungsgesellschaft mbH, and Dortmunder Logistik GmbH (DOLOG). The group also holds stakes in regional waste-to-energy plants and disposal facilities. In recent years, EDG has faced challenges such as the 2021 Greensill Bank insolvency, where it held deposits that were fully reimbursed through the German banks' deposit insurance scheme. The company continues to focus on recycling, circular economy, and sustainable waste management practices for Dortmund.

History

Entsorgung Dortmund GmbH (EDG) was founded in 1991 and began operations in January 1992. It was created through the conversion of the Dortmund city street cleaning office (Stadtreinigungsamt) into a private-law company. The initial main tasks were to ensure waste disposal for private households and to clean public streets and squares. Over the following 30 years, the range of services was systematically expanded. In 1992, the company operated a landfill in Deusen, which was later almost completely renaturalized and renamed 'Deusenberg' following public suggestion. On the site of the former landfill, EDG built a bike arena for beginners and advanced riders. Adjacent to the second Dortmund landfill, Deponie Grevel, EDG planned and built a modern landfill: Deponie Dortmund-Nordost. This landfill was considered a European model facility due to its advanced technology and safety measures, and it began operation in May 1994 to ensure disposal security for Dortmund well into the next millennium. Since June 2005, a nationwide ban on landfilling waste with an organic content exceeding 5% has been in effect, which also applied to Deponie Dortmund-Nordost. To keep waste fees constant for the population, EDG entered into regional waste management cooperations with the cities of Hamm, Hagen, and Iserlohn, and since the landfill ban, it has treated Dortmund household waste in the waste incineration plants of these municipalities. In 2021, during the insolvency of Greensill Bank, it became known that EDG held deposits at the institute. The business practices of the bank were criticized by Dortmund's mayor Thomas Westphal as unacceptable and risky for municipal companies. EDG received its deposits fully reimbursed through the deposit insurance of the German Banks Association. The EDG group includes several subsidiaries: Dortmunder Recycling GmbH (DOREG) 75.1% (later 100% after EDG Holding acquired the remaining shares in 2021, with tasks transferred to DOGA on January 1, 2022), Dortmunder Mineralstoffverwertungs GmbH (DOMIG) 51%, Dortmunder Gesellschaft für Abfall mbH (DOGA) 100%, Welge Entsorgung GmbH 100%, MHB Betriebsführungsgesellschaft mbH 74.9%, Hagener Entsorgungsbetrieb (HEB) 20%, HUI GmbH 20%, AMK GmbH 24.5%, and Dortmunder Logistik GmbH (DOLOG) 100%.
