Overview
The Environment and Health Fund (Hebrew: הקרן לבריאות וסביבה) was an Israeli nonprofit association based in Jerusalem that operated from 2007 until the end of 2021. Its mission was to expand and deepen scientific research and training at the intersection of environmental quality and human health, to strengthen the expertise of government officials and policymakers in this field, and to raise public awareness by disseminating new and updated scientific information. To pursue these goals, the Fund supported research aimed at understanding how environmental pollution can be reduced and studies examining the relationship between health and the environment — particularly between environmental pollution and health — with the objective of improving the health of Israel's population. It awarded scholarships and grants to researchers, post-doctoral fellows, doctoral students and master's students working in its target fields, and organized courses, conferences and study days. Among its flagship initiatives, the Fund provided grants to the Hebrew University and the Technion to establish centers of excellence in the areas of agriculture, health and environment, and in environmental exposure and health. It held an annual conference that brought together all stakeholders in the health and environment field to discuss pressing issues in international research that are especially relevant to Israeli challenges. It also published an annual newsletter on health and environment topics, featuring articles examining relevant issues in its field of activity. The Fund developed a knowledge center presenting the main diseases affected by environmental pollution (such as asthma, Parkinson's disease and breast cancer) and the principal environmental factors affecting health (including exposure to ozone, fine particulate matter and pesticides). Its board chair was Professor Ilan Chet. The Fund concluded its activities at the end of 2021.
History
The Environment and Health Fund was founded in 2007 as an Israeli nonprofit association (עמותה) based in Jerusalem. It was established to promote interdisciplinary research, primarily in fields adjacent to the intersection of environmental quality and human health. Throughout its operational life, the Fund pursued three broad objectives: to expand and deepen scientific research and training in the environment and health field; to deepen the expertise of government officials and policymakers in the field; and to raise awareness and disseminate new and updated scientific information among the general public. To achieve these goals, it supported research intended to understand how environmental pollution can be reduced, as well as research on the relationship between health and the environment — especially between environmental pollution and health — with the aim of improving the health of Israel's population. The Fund awarded scholarships to researchers, post-doctoral fellows, doctoral students and master's students working in its target areas, and organized courses, conferences and study days. As part of its efforts to advance understanding of the health–environment connection in Israel, it provided grants to the Hebrew University and the Technion to open centers of excellence in the fields of agriculture, health and environment, and in environmental exposure and health. Each year the Fund held a conference that brought together all stakeholders in the health and environment field under one roof, dedicated to discussing pressing issues in international research that are especially relevant to Israeli challenges. It also published an annual newsletter on health and environment topics, containing a variety of articles examining relevant issues in its field of activity. In addition, the Fund developed a knowledge center presenting the main diseases affected by environmental pollution (such as asthma, Parkinson's disease and breast cancer) and the principal environmental factors affecting health (including exposure to ozone, fine particulate matter and pesticides). Professor Ilan Chet served as chair of the Fund's board of directors. The Fund concluded its activities at the end of 2021.
