Overview

Enwor – energie & wasser vor ort GmbH was a municipal energy and water supply company based in Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid in the StädteRegion Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was formed at the beginning of 2004 through the merger of the "Wasserwerk des Kreises Aachen" (Waterworks of the Aachen District) and "ASEAG Energie GmbH". As a regional utility, Enwor supplied drinking water to around 270,000 people, electricity to roughly 85,000 of them, and natural gas to about 20,000, operating energy and drinking-water networks with a total length of approximately 2,300 kilometres. Its service area covered the towns of Alsdorf (excluding Bettendorf), Baesweiler, Eschweiler (for the most part), Herzogenrath, Roetgen-Rott, Stolberg and Würselen in the StädteRegion Aachen, as well as the town of Übach-Palenberg in the Heinsberg district. In Eschweiler it acted as a wholesale supplier to the municipal waterworks "Städt. Wasserwerk Eschweiler GmbH". Beyond water, Enwor supplied electricity and partly district heating to Würselen and Herzogenrath, and natural gas to Herzogenrath. In cooperation with internet providers such as NetAachen, it also laid broadband cables across large parts of its supply area. The company employed around 320 people. Drinking-water extraction and treatment was carried out via WAG Nordeifel, a subsidiary of STAWAG. Enwor was a shareholder in Trianel, a joint venture of mainly German utility companies active in generation, trading and sales, which builds renewable power plant capacity together with its shareholders. On 1 October 2024, Enwor was merged into Stadtwerke Aachen AG (STAWAG) and now operates under the name "STAWAG – Stadt- und Städteregionswerke Aachen AG". In addition, operational grid operation was fully taken over by Regionetz GmbH as of 1 January 2025. The Enwor brand thus ceased to exist as an independent utility, its functions absorbed into the larger STAWAG municipal group.

History

Enwor – energie & wasser vor ort GmbH was created at the beginning of 2004 through the merger of two predecessor organisations: the "Wasserwerk des Kreises Aachen" (Waterworks of the Aachen District) and "ASEAG Energie GmbH". The new company was headquartered in Herzogenrath-Kohlscheid in the StädteRegion Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and operated as a municipal energy and water supply utility. Its core business was the supply of drinking water, electricity, natural gas and district heating to a defined service area covering several towns in the StädteRegion Aachen and one town in the neighbouring Heinsberg district. Over the years, Enwor built and maintained energy and drinking-water networks with a total length of approximately 2,300 kilometres. It supplied drinking water to around 270,000 people, of whom roughly 85,000 also received electricity and about 20,000 also received natural gas. The company employed around 320 staff. Drinking-water extraction and treatment was handled through WAG Nordeifel, a subsidiary of STAWAG. Enwor was also a shareholder in Trianel, a joint venture of mainly German utility companies active in generation, trading and sales, which builds renewable power plant capacity together with its shareholders. In cooperation with internet providers such as NetAachen, Enwor laid broadband cables in large parts of its supply area. In Eschweiler, it acted as a wholesale supplier to the municipal waterworks "Städt. Wasserwerk Eschweiler GmbH". Since 1 January 2019, all citizens of the town of Übach-Palenberg have been supplied with drinking water by Stadtwerke Übach-Palenberg GmbH, with the water operationally managed by Enwor. On 1 October 2024, Enwor was merged into Stadtwerke Aachen AG (STAWAG) and now operates under the name "STAWAG – Stadt- und Städteregionswerke Aachen AG". Furthermore, operational grid operation was fully taken over by Regionetz GmbH as of 1 January 2025. The Enwor brand thus ceased to exist as an independent entity, its functions absorbed into the larger STAWAG municipal group.
