Overview
Epsa Music is an Argentine independent record label founded in 1992 as the music arm of EPSA (Electrical Products SA), a company that began manufacturing cartridges and tapes in 1968. The label was created by the Casella sisters — Laura, Alba and Elba — and is today led by Laura Tesoriero, CEO and daughter of Laura Casella. Epsa Music specializes in the production, promotion and commercialization of Argentine music, particularly tango, Andean music, chamamé and folklore. It has grown into one of the most important record companies in South America, combining production and distribution, A&R and digital music assets. Its catalog includes internationally renowned artists such as Sexteto Mayor (2003 Grammy winners), El Arranque (an international tango group that collaborated with Wynton Marsalis) and Astor Piazzolla (a multi-platinum international artist). Since August 2003, Epsa Music has distributed its controlled South American music catalog through The Orchard, a distribution agreement that expanded its global reach. The label also organizes events such as El concurso de La Falda, a competition whose winner, Esteban Riera, produced his debut album with Epsa. Epsa Music remains an active independent label based in Argentina, dedicated to promoting Argentine and South American music worldwide.
History
Epsa Music originated as an extension of EPSA (Electrical Products SA), a company that began manufacturing cartridges and tapes in 1968. EPSA was a pioneer in phonographic and digital formats, led by Laura Casella, her daughter Laura Tesoriero, and her sisters Alba and Elba Casella. The company was the first in Argentina to manufacture magazines, then cassettes, and also the first to have a machine for making compact discs. The first album released by Epsa was Mozart's Requiem, conducted by Padre Segade. Among the early artists who produced and distributed their music with Epsa were Aníbal Arias, Juanjo Domínguez, Juan Falú, Rudy and Niní Flores (as part of the albums Guitarras en el mundo), Hilda Herrera and Adolfo Abalos. In 1992, the Epsa Music label was launched and became the dominant label for tango and Argentine folk music, with a broad, varied and growing catalog. In 2004, Epsa Music signed an agreement with The Orchard to distribute a large part of its independent Argentine compositions. Epsa has distributed its controlled South American music catalog through The Orchard since August 2003, including internationally renowned artists such as Sexteto Mayor (2003 Grammy winners), El Arranque (an international tango group that collaborated with Wynton Marsalis) and Astor Piazzolla (a multi-platinum international artist). In the same year, they organized an event called El concurso de La Falda, where the winner Esteban Riera produced his debut album. Today, Epsa Music is presided over by Laura Tesoriero, CEO of the brand and daughter of Laura Casella.
