Overview

Epson is the principal global brand of Seiko Epson Corporation, a Japanese technology manufacturer headquartered in Suwa, Nagano. Although the company is now most closely associated with inkjet printers and business imaging systems, its origins lie in precision watch-part manufacturing. Daiwa Kogyo was established in 1942 by Hisao Yamazaki, a local clock-shop owner and former employee of K. Hattori, and initially supplied parts to Daini Seikosha, a predecessor of Seiko Instruments. The business expanded through the postwar development of watches, precision components, electronic timing devices, and micromechatronics. The route into printing began with the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. A printing timer was needed for event timing, prompting the company’s subsidiary Shinshu Seiki to develop compact electronic printing technology. In 1968 it introduced the EP-101, widely described as the first mini-printer. The Epson name was created in 1975 for a successor generation of products, combining “EP,” for electronic printer, with “son.” Epson America was also established that year, beginning the brand’s international expansion. Epson became a major force in computer printing during the late 1970s and 1980s. The TX-80 and MX-80 dot-matrix printers achieved broad adoption, particularly in personal-computer and business environments. The company also developed ESC/P, a printer-control language that became a widely used de facto standard for dot-matrix printing. In 1982 Shinshu Seiki adopted the Epson name, and in 1985 Suwa Seikosha and Epson Corporation merged to form Seiko Epson Corporation. The company later shifted strongly toward inkjet technology. Its Micro Piezo system uses piezoelectric elements to eject ink without thermally heating the printhead. This technology supported the Stylus family and subsequent consumer, office, photographic, and industrial products. Epson also built major businesses in large-format printing, point-of-sale systems, scanners, projectors, robotics, watches, smartglasses, and electronic components. The EcoTank refillable-ink concept, introduced internationally in the 2010s, addressed the operating-cost limitations of conventional cartridges by using high-capacity ink tanks filled from bottles. Epson’s product portfolio now spans home and office printers, multifunction devices, commercial and industrial print systems, photo and signage printers, projectors, scanners, label and receipt printers, and factory-automation equipment. Related activities include precision components, sensing devices, semiconductors, crystal oscillators, robots, smartglasses, and watches sold under Epson-owned or associated brands. The corporation continues to manufacture certain Seiko timepieces, but it is independently managed from Seiko Group Corporation. Epson’s positioning combines Japanese precision manufacturing, imaging expertise, reliability, and lower-waste or lower-intervention printing propositions. Its principal challenges include intense printer competition, changing office workflows, pressure over consumables economics, and the continuing transition from paper-based processes to digital systems.

History

Seiko Epson’s roots reach back to Daiwa Kogyo, founded in May 1942 in Suwa, Nagano. The small manufacturer began by producing watch parts, with financial support from the Hattori family and business links to Daini Seikosha. In 1943, Daini Seikosha established a Suwa factory, and in 1959 the Suwa operation was combined with Daiwa Kogyo to form Suwa Seikosha. This organization developed precision manufacturing capabilities that later supported watches, printers, projectors, robots, and electronic components. The company’s printing history was stimulated by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where Seiko’s official timekeeping role created demand for an electronic printer capable of producing timing records. Shinshu Seiki, a subsidiary established in 1961 to supply precision watch components, developed the EP-101 and released it in September 1968. The compact printer was adopted in calculators and became the technical ancestor of the Epson printer family. In 1975 the company introduced the Epson name and established Epson America, providing a dedicated international sales presence. Epson’s TX-80, released in 1978, and MX-80, released in 1980, were important dot-matrix products. The MX-80 became particularly successful in the United States and helped make Epson a leading supplier for personal computers and office systems. Epson Standard Code for Printers, or ESC/P, also became an influential control language for dot-matrix printing. In 1982 Shinshu Seiki renamed itself Epson Corporation. It introduced the HX-20 portable computer the same year and continued to diversify into computers, displays, watches, and precision electronics. Suwa Seikosha and Epson Corporation merged in 1985 to create Seiko Epson Corporation. During the 1990s Epson expanded into inkjet printing. Micro Piezo printheads used piezoelectric elements to control ink droplets without heating the ink at the nozzle. The technology was used in Epson Stylus products, including color printers, and later became a foundation for photographic, office, commercial, and industrial printing. The company also developed retail and business sales programs and expanded its scanner, projector, and point-of-sale offerings. Diversification continued in the 2000s and 2010s. Epson launched the R-D1 digital rangefinder in 2004, entered transparent-display smartglasses with Moverio in 2011, and introduced further wireless multifunction and scanner products. The company’s refillable EcoTank approach became a major strategic response to consumer dissatisfaction with frequent cartridge replacement and high running costs. Large-format SureColor products broadened the brand into professional photography, proofing, signage, textile, and production applications. Epson Robots and industrial automation extended the company’s precision-engineering capabilities into factories. Seiko Epson became a publicly traded company on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2003 and was included in the Nikkei Stock Average from 2017. It remains a separately managed company from Seiko Group Corporation, despite historical ties and overlapping watch-manufacturing relationships. Epson continues to operate internationally across consumer, office, commercial, industrial, and component markets. Its modern identity is centered on printing and imaging, while precision electronics, robotics, projection, smart devices, and watch technologies remain part of the wider corporate portfolio.

Controversies

  • 2015

    Printer cartridge-level reporting controversy

  • 2015

Reports of ink remaining after empty indication

Reports again questioned Epson printers that identified cartridges as empty while some ink remained. Epson said the retained ink was associated with maintenance and protection of print heads and explained that users could sometimes replace a fuller cartridge for cleaning before returning to the original cartridge.

  • 2003

    Dutch ink-cartridge boycott dispute

A Dutch consumer association urged its members to boycott Epson inkjet printers, alleging that customers were charged for ink that could not be used. The organization later withdrew the nationwide boycott recommendation and acknowledged Epson’s explanation that residual ink was needed for printhead protection and maintenance. A Netherlands-based consumer organization alleged that Epson customers paid for ink that could not be used and called for a boycott. It later retracted the nationwide boycott call after acknowledging Epson's explanation that retained ink supported print-head operation and maintenance.
