Overview
EQT Infrastructure is the dedicated infrastructure investment business area of EQT AB, the Stockholm-based global investment organization founded in 1994 by the Wallenberg family's Investor AB together with SEB. EQT began as a private equity house focused on the Nordic region and grew into a multi-strategy alternative asset manager spanning private capital, real assets (infrastructure and real estate) and credit. EQT Infrastructure was established as a distinct strategy within that structure, raising dedicated closed-end funds from institutional investors such as pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, insurers and endowments. The platform invests in infrastructure and infrastructure-like businesses — typically companies with long-lived, essential assets and predictable cash flows. Its focus areas have included energy and utilities, transportation and logistics, telecommunications and digital infrastructure (including fibre, data centres and towers), environmental and waste services, and social infrastructure. EQT Infrastructure generally seeks control or co-control positions, often in mid-to-large cap companies, and pursues value creation through operational improvement, capital investment, digitalization and sustainability initiatives rather than pure financial engineering. EQT Infrastructure operates as part of EQT's Real Assets segment alongside EQT Real Estate. It is managed by investment advisory teams within the EQT group and raises capital through successive vintages of EQT Infrastructure funds. The strategy has expanded geographically from its Nordic and European base into North America and, more recently, Asia-Pacific, reflecting EQT's broader globalization. EQT AB has been publicly listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 2019, giving the group a permanent capital base and greater transparency; EQT Infrastructure itself is not separately listed and operates as a subsidiary business line. EQT Infrastructure's positioning rests on EQT's industrial heritage, its network of industrial advisors and its thematic approach to sectors undergoing structural change — notably the energy transition, decarbonization and digitalization of infrastructure. The platform is a significant owner of European infrastructure assets and has become one of the larger infrastructure managers globally, competing with other large alternatives managers in the infrastructure fundraising market.
History
EQT was founded in 1994 by Investor AB, the Wallenberg family investment company, together with SEB, as a Nordic private equity firm. Over the following two decades it expanded from buyouts into real assets and credit, building a multi-strategy alternative investment platform. EQT Infrastructure was created as a dedicated infrastructure strategy within EQT's real assets segment, allowing the group to raise institutional capital for long-life, essential-asset businesses. The infrastructure strategy grew alongside EQT's broader expansion from the Nordics into Continental Europe, the UK and North America. Successive EQT Infrastructure funds increased in size and scope, moving from core European utility and transport assets toward digital infrastructure, energy transition and environmental services. EQT also developed adjacent capabilities such as EQT Real Estate and an active core infrastructure approach aimed at lower-risk, longer-hold assets. In 2019 EQT AB listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, a milestone that gave the group permanent capital and a public currency for growth. EQT Infrastructure continued to scale within the listed group, expanding its investor base and geographic reach, including activity in Asia-Pacific. The platform remains a business area of EQT AB rather than a separately listed entity.
