Overview

Erlebnispark Steinau an der Straße is a family-run adventure park in the Hessian Spessart. Since the takeover of the "old Thalhofpark" in 1994, it has developed into an extensive family and leisure park in the countryside, where families with children can enjoy numerous attractions and nature on around 25 hectares. The park's main target group is children aged 3 to 13, and it offers a mix of agricultural impressions, cultural knowledge and many self-powered play and fun stations. It is located on the grounds of a former old estate, the "Thalhof", high above the Brothers Grimm town of Steinau an der Straße in the Bergwinkel of the upper Kinzig valley.

History

The park is located on the grounds of a former old estate, the "Thalhof", high above (390 m above sea level) the Brothers Grimm town of Steinau an der Straße, in the Bergwinkel of the upper Kinzig valley. The Thalhof, built around 1770, was initially established and used in the 18th century by Count Ulrich von Hanau as a pure horse-breeding operation. In the 19th century the Thalhof was used as a farm and in the 20th century finally as a forestry office with a forestry school. In the 1960s a farmer who had fled from East Germany acquired the farm with the help of state funding. In 1967 or 1968 he set up a tavern in the residential building as well as a garden restaurant. As the new owner, Helmut Hanzsch not only had a lucky hand for flowers, but also turned the excursion destination into a regional attraction with exotic animals such as bears, lions and chimpanzees. Since the takeover of the "old Thalhofpark" in 1994, the family-run Erlebnispark Steinau has developed into an extensive family and leisure park in the countryside. In 1994 it reopened as Erlebnispark Steinau an der Straße with the Luna-Loop and the park railway "Steinau-Express" as the first attractions. In 1995 the summer toboggan run and water bob were built and put into operation. In 1996 the Fliegenpilzkarussell opened. In 1997 a trampoline facility and a pit-pat facility followed. In 1998 the first barbecue huts were built and four rides were expanded (horse riding track, children's railway, children's carousel and swing ride). In 1999 the swing arch "Holiday-Schaukel" was added. In 2000 the agricultural museum was inaugurated. In 2001 the first bouncy cushion was installed and new barbecue huts and picnic pavilions were built. In 2002 the tree trunk rally followed. In 2003 the all-weather hall opened. In 2004 the 10th anniversary was celebrated with the inauguration of the Albatrosbahn and the giant slide. In 2005 a mini children's Ferris wheel and a roller slide were added. In 2006 further barbecue huts and the construction of the Waldhaus grills followed, along with fairy tale telling. In 2007 the donkey "Lulu" became the star of the ZDF documentary series "S.O.S. Tierbabys", and the mountain and valley railway "Froschkönig" opened as well as pony and donkey riding. In 2008 the gold washing facility "Erli's Goldrausch" was put into operation. In 2009 the park's 15th anniversary was celebrated and "ERLI" was introduced as a walk-act figure. In 2010 the "Teufelsrad" was expanded and the motor skills and rope garden "Klettermax" was added. In 2011 a multimedia guide was introduced in the agricultural museum, the mini-book series "ERLIs Abenteuer" started, and the large barbecue hut "Brüder-Grimm-Hütte" for company events was newly built. In 2012 the forest playground "Spessart-Räuber" was built. In 2013 a mud playground, another bouncy cushion and the pirate ship "BlackPearl" were added, along with the second edition of the mini-book series (3 new adventures). In 2014 the 20th anniversary was celebrated and "ERLIs Seifenkiste" – the world's smallest roller coaster – opened. In 2015 the "Zwergenbaustelle" was added and the first "Esel-Krimi" was published. In 2016 the park was expanded with "Opa-THEOs-Floßfahrt", the water playground "Wasser-Schorsch" and "ERLIs Striegelstall". In 2017 "ERLIs Wackelstein – Schi..." followed.
