Overview

Erlenbacher Backwaren GmbH is a German manufacturer of frozen cakes, gateaux and cream-based desserts, headquartered in Groß-Gerau in the state of Hesse. It ranks among the largest German producers of deep-frozen cakes and cream products, and its products are distributed in more than 45 countries worldwide. The company's sales focus is on the European out-of-home market, meaning cafés, restaurants, hotels, catering and similar foodservice channels rather than primarily retail consumers. The business was founded in 1973 by Klaus Fischer in Nieder-Erlenbach near Frankfurt am Main. In its early years Erlenbacher produced exclusively on behalf of other customers, with its first product being an apple cake made for a frozen-food home-delivery service that sold the cake to end consumers under its own packaging and distribution. The company moved its headquarters to Groß-Gerau in 1977. In 1998 it was acquired by Schöller, then its largest customer, and in 1999 it began selling cakes and gateaux under its own name. Südzucker, which had in the meantime acquired Schöller and therefore Erlenbacher, sold the company to the Swiss Nestlé group in 2002. In 2005 the company launched the "Backhits" brand for selling cakes through cash-and-carry wholesale markets. A major plant expansion followed between 2008 and 2011. Since 1 October 2016 Erlenbacher Backwaren GmbH has belonged to Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and the British ice cream manufacturer R&R Ice Cream. Erlenbacher employs more than 545 people who produce roughly 23 million cakes, gateaux and tartlets each year, making the company one of the largest employers in Groß-Gerau and the surrounding area. Its portfolio centres on frozen baked goods — whole cakes, layered gateaux, tartlets and cream-filled products — supplied to foodservice and out-of-home customers, with additional distribution through wholesale channels under the Backhits brand.

History

Erlenbacher Backwaren was founded in 1973 by Klaus Fischer in Nieder-Erlenbach near Frankfurt am Main. At the time the company produced exclusively on behalf of other customers; its first cake was an apple cake made for a frozen-food home-delivery service, which then sold the cake to end consumers under its own packaging and distribution. In 1977 the company relocated its headquarters to Groß-Gerau in Hesse, where it remains based. In 1998 Erlenbacher was acquired by Schöller, then its largest customer. A year later, in 1999, the company began selling cakes and gateaux under its own name, moving beyond pure contract manufacturing. In 2002 Südzucker — which had in the meantime acquired Schöller and with it Erlenbacher — sold the company to the Swiss Nestlé group. In 2005 Erlenbacher launched the "Backhits" brand to sell cakes through cash-and-carry wholesale markets. Between 2008 and 2011 the company carried out a major expansion of its production plant. Since 1 October 2016 Erlenbacher Backwaren GmbH has been part of Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and the British ice cream manufacturer R&R Ice Cream. Today Erlenbacher is one of the largest German producers of deep-frozen cakes and cream products. Its products are distributed in more than 45 countries, with the sales focus on the European out-of-home market. The company employs more than 545 people who produce approximately 23 million cakes, gateaux and tartlets annually, making it one of the largest employers in Groß-Gerau and the surrounding area.
