Overview

The Ernst Göhner Foundation (German: Ernst Göhner Stiftung, EGS) is a Swiss foundation based in Zug. It was established as the gift of entrepreneur Ernst Göhner (1900–1971) to posterity, and it operates with both entrepreneurial and philanthropic character while also pursuing the purposes of a family foundation. The foundation is active across Switzerland and focuses on four main areas: culture, education and science, environment, and social welfare. In culture, it promotes professional cultural creation in all disciplines throughout Switzerland, with an emphasis on supra-regional impact, support for young talent, and both project and infrastructure contributions. In education and science, it supports the training and further education of gifted young people in all career directions as well as young entrepreneurship, primarily through contributions to selected education programs and infrastructure projects of educational institutions, and it considers all disciplines in science and research. In the environmental area, it provides financial contributions for the sustainable preservation, restoration, or enhancement of natural habitats and animal and plant life in Switzerland, engages in animal protection, and seeks to sensitize the population—especially children and young people—to environmental issues. In the social area, it supports socially disadvantaged, physically or mentally impaired, or ill people and helps integrate them into society and the working world. In 2021, the foundation established the Kick Foundation to promote young entrepreneurship. The foundation is headquartered in Zug and operates as a private philanthropic institution.

History

The Ernst Göhner Foundation was created as the legacy of Swiss entrepreneur Ernst Göhner (1900–1971). It is headquartered in Zug and was designed to have a dual character: entrepreneurial and philanthropic, while also serving as a family foundation. Over the decades it has developed into a grant-making institution active throughout Switzerland. Its funding is organized around four program areas. Culture supports professional cultural production in all disciplines with a national reach, prioritizing young talent and providing both project grants and infrastructure contributions. Education and Science supports the training of gifted young people across all professions and promotes young entrepreneurship, mainly through contributions to selected educational programs and infrastructure projects, and it funds research across all disciplines. Environment provides financial support for the sustainable preservation, restoration, and upgrading of natural habitats and biodiversity in Switzerland, includes animal welfare, and aims to raise awareness among the public, particularly children and youth. Social welfare supports disadvantaged, physically or mentally impaired, or ill people and their integration into society and the workforce. In 2021 the foundation established the Kick Foundation to promote young entrepreneurship, extending its commitment to the next generation of business founders.
