Overview
ESB Networks is the Irish electricity distribution system operator (DSO), distribution asset owner (DAO), and onshore transmission asset owner (TAO). It works to meet the needs of all electricity customers in Ireland, regardless of supplier. As TAO, it is responsible for building, maintaining, and owning the high voltage transmission system in line with requirements set out by EirGrid, the transmission system operator (TSO). As DAO and DSO, it owns and carries out all functions relating to the electricity distribution system, including asset management, planning, construction, and maintenance of the high, medium, and low voltage distribution network, and operates the medium and low voltage distribution network. ESB Networks has over 3,000 employees all over the country and builds and runs the medium and low voltage electricity systems, including power stations, overhead lines, poles, and underground cables. Its work is funded by 'use of system' charges billed to every customer by their electricity suppliers, checked by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU). It operates, installs, maintains, and reads meters for its customer base; over 1.9m smart meters are now remotely read daily, and standard meters are read up to four times a year.
