Overview

Escofet 1886, S.A. is a Spanish company headquartered in Barcelona that designs and manufactures urban elements and architectural concrete. Founded in 1886 by Jaume Escofet as Escofet y Fortuny Sociedad Colectiva, the company began by producing paving and hydraulic mosaic tiles, quickly gaining recognition with a gold medal at the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. Over more than 130 years, Escofet has become an international reference in landscape architecture, with concrete and Barcelona as the two defining elements of its identity. The company operates through four main lines: Urban Life (urban furniture such as benches, chairs, tables, planters, fountains and litter bins), Lighting (public space lighting solutions), Walking (paving design and creation), and Building (architectural concrete projects and pieces). Its main production center is in Martorell, near Barcelona, where it manufactures prefabricated concrete furniture and architectural elements. Escofet collaborates with architects, designers and landscape architects to create integral urban design projects, and its products are present in avenues, parks, streets, squares and boulevards in numerous countries. Escofet has a strong commitment to sustainability and circularity, exemplified by its Eco-Grey® concrete, which incorporates 37% recycled aggregate and reduces CO₂ emissions. The company has also adopted 3D printing to expand design possibilities while maintaining industrial rigor. Its work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Spanish National Design Award in 1992 and four ADI-FAD Gold Deltas (1962, 1975, 2001, 2018). Recent accolades include the 2025 SIT Furniture Design Award and the 2025 Architizer A+Product Award for the Gather & Tiers collections designed with Foster + Partners. Escofet is part of the Molins group, a business group that aims to drive social development and quality of life through innovative and sustainable construction solutions. The company remains active and continues to shape public spaces worldwide, with recent projects such as the Ellinikon Experience Park in Athens, La Explanada in Alicante, and Parque Jardines Mediterráneos de la Hoya in Almería. Its long-standing collaboration on the Sagrada Família basilica since 1996 further cements its role in Barcelona's architectural heritage.

History

Escofet was founded in 1886 by Jaume Escofet as Escofet y Fortuny Sociedad Colectiva, dedicated to the manufacture of paving. The company received a gold medal at the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. In 1904, Escofet produced hydraulic mosaic tiles in collaboration with Modernisme architects such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Alexandre de Riquer; the best example is the hexagonal mosaic designed by Antoni Gaudí for the interior of Casa Batlló, an adaptation of which paved Barcelona's Paseo de Gracia 90 years later. In 1906, the company entered the urban space by producing 'panots' to pave Barcelona's sidewalks, initiating a close relationship with the city's public space. In 1961, Escofet introduced vibro-pressed concrete to Spain, leading to a series of automated paving products suitable for interior and exterior, reaffirming its presence in the city with significant pavements such as Las Ramblas, designed by Adolfo Florensa in 1968. In 1974, reinforced concrete façade panels opened new technological possibilities for the company. Since 1996, Escofet has actively collaborated on the Sagrada Família basilica project, contributing its expertise in design and concrete. Over the decades, Escofet has expanded its activities into urban furniture, lighting, and architectural concrete, operating through four lines: Urban Life, Lighting, Walking, and Building. Its main production center is in Martorell. The company has received numerous awards, including the Spanish National Design Award in 1992 and four ADI-FAD Gold Deltas in 1962, 1975, 2001, and 2018. In 2025, the Gather & Tiers collections designed with Foster + Partners won the SIT Furniture Design Award and the Architizer A+Product Award. Escofet is part of the Molins group and continues to transform cities worldwide.
