Overview

Escola Grèvol is a cooperative school located in the Poblenou neighbourhood of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was founded in 1973 through the merger of two existing schools, Sant Lluís and Puríssima, and initially served around five hundred children, almost all from the local neighbourhood. At its creation, it offered nursery and basic general education classes taught by about ten teachers, spread across three buildings: part of a building at the Casino roundabout, a floor of a building on Carrer Dr. Trueta with the Rambla, and a floor of a building at the corner of Dr. Trueta and Plaça de Sant Bernat Calvó. In 1995 the school faced a critical situation: it did not meet the requirements of the then-current Organic Law on the General Education System and was to be closed. Mobilised by Joan Barot i Olivé, some 415 families and 38 teachers together created a cooperative and contributed half of the resources for a new building project, which became a reality in 1997. The parents' and teachers' cooperative moved the centre to a new building at the intersection of Carrer de Fluvià and Carrer del Taulat. In the cooperative's governing council, teachers have more weight than parents. The school is a pioneer in pedagogical innovation, in English learning, in the use of new technologies by students, and in the subject 'Ser Emprenedor' (Being an Entrepreneur). From its foundation, the school was directed by Joan Barot i Olivé until his retirement in 2009. Today, Escola Grèvol offers Infantil (nursery), Primària (primary) and Secundària (secondary/ESO) education. Its educational project emphasises values education, cooperativism, environmentalism, satisfaction in work well done, solidarity, teamwork, and effort to progress. The school's facilities are designed to adapt to new methodologies and the comfort of its students. It also provides services to support family reconciliation, including a holiday club and camps, a dining hall, morning care, a swimming pool, and rental of facilities. The school maintains an active blog with news on topics such as philosophy for critical thinking, psychomotricity in early childhood education, and student performances.
