Overview

Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (EVV) is the municipal holding company of the City of Essen in Germany's Ruhr region. Founded in 1979, it is a 100 percent subsidiary of the City of Essen and acts as a holding and service provider for the city's utility and infrastructure participations. Its central business field is the supply of heat, electricity and gas, but its portfolio also spans public transport, waste disposal, wastewater, telecommunications, broadband and property development. The EVV describes itself as a service provider, impulse generator and innovation driver within the 'Konzern Stadt Essen', contributing to the city's energy transition and climate neutrality goal by 2040. The company was established in 1979 together with its then organ companies Essener Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (EVAG) and Stadtwerke Essen AG (SWE). Over the following decades it acquired and consolidated numerous municipal participations, including Allbau AG, Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH, RGE Servicegesellschaft, Entsorgungsbetriebe Essen and essen.net. In 2014, together with its municipal participations, it employed around 4,700 people, making it one of the largest municipal companies of its kind in Germany. In 2022, EVV and its subsidiaries reported revenue of EUR 630.5 million and an average of 3,279 employees. Today EVV's key subsidiaries and participations include Stadtwerke Essen, essen.net, Ruhrfibre Essen, Stromnetz Essen, Weisse Flotte and Ruhrbahn. It is also indirectly involved in Infralogistik ruhr, Iqony Fernwärme Essen, Otto Lingner Verkehrs-GmbH, Stromnetz Essen Verwaltung, Wassergewinnung Essen and Entwässerung Essen. Since 2019 the Smart City coordination office of the City of Essen has been housed under EVV's roof, working on pilot projects such as LoRaWAN networks and digitalization of care. EVV is managed by Geschäftsführer Jochen Sander, with Florian Fuchs as chairman of the supervisory board.

History

Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (EVV) was founded in 1979 as a 100 percent subsidiary of the City of Essen, with the organ companies Essener Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (EVAG) and Stadtwerke Essen AG (SWE). Its purpose was to bundle the city's utility and transport participations under a single holding. In 1998, EVV acquired 82.19 percent of the shares of Allbau AG from the City of Essen. In 2000, the new subsidiary Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH (WFB) was founded. In 2005, 100 percent of the shares in RGE Servicegesellschaft mbH Essen (RGE) were transferred from the City of Essen to EVV, and 51 percent of the shares in Entsorgungsbetriebe Essen GmbH (EBE) were also transferred. In 2007, EVV acquired EVV Verwertungs- und Betriebs GmbH (EVB) from Entsorgungsbetriebe Essen GmbH. In 2010, essen.net GmbH was founded with a fifty percent share, a company for the construction, expansion, operation and rental of broadband cable networks. Four years later, EVV bought the remaining 50 percent of essen.net GmbH. By 2014, EVV together with its municipal participations employed around 4,700 people, making it one of the largest municipal companies of its kind in Germany. In 2016, EVV sold its Allbau AG shares to the City of Essen, sold and transferred its IT division to Essener Systemhaus (ESH), and consolidated service functions located at EVV into Stadtwerke and EVAG. In 2017, EVV sold its shares in RGE and EVB to the City of Essen. In the same year, EVAG was converted into a GmbH named Ruhrbahn GmbH. In 2022, EVV participated alongside other investors in the founding of the public-private partnership ruhrfibre Essen Netz GmbH & Co. KG, which aims to drive citywide fiber optic expansion in Essen, with an investment sum of around EUR 180 million. In 2023, plans became known for a takeover of the Essen city harbor by an EVV subsidiary, with the goal of area development in the harbor, among other things for commercial settlements. On 29 May 2024, the City Council of Essen decided to transfer the Essen city harbor from Stadtwerke Essen to Entwicklungsgesellschaft Urbane Flächen und Hafen Essen mbH (EUH), which emerged from a renaming of EVV subsidiary essen.net. EUH takes over the operation of the Essen harbor as a logistics center. EVV plans to commission a solar carport at the Messe parking lot P10 in Essen-Haarzopf from 2026, one of several measures to install solar systems at public places and buildings in the city of Essen.
