Overview

ESWE Versorgungs AG is a German energy company headquartered in Wiesbaden, the capital of the state of Hesse. It supplies the city with electricity, natural gas and district heating, and also offers electricity and natural gas beyond the region. Its service portfolio extends to on-site energy consulting, installation of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems, and an intelligent home emergency call service. The abbreviation ESWE traces back to the former municipal utility Stadtwerke Wiesbaden; the letters S and W have been spelled out phonetically as "Es" and "We" in uppercase since a 1970 advertising campaign modernised the company's image. The company's origins lie in the municipal water and lighting works. On 30 April 1930 the Wiesbaden city parliament decided to convert these into a stock corporation to improve access to the loan market and gain flexibility and independence. In 1942 the municipal transport operations were integrated, creating a communal "cross-association" (Querverbund). The transport operations were spun off in 2000 into a separate GmbH. In 2002 the ESWE Innovation and Climate Protection Fund was established to support private individuals and companies in sustainable measures, including solar storage batteries. In 2005 the Schierstein waterworks was transferred to Hessenwasser, and in 2006 ESWE Netz GmbH was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary (since 2014 Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz GmbH, or sw netz). In 2009 the Gaswerksverband Rheingau AG was merged into ESWE Versorgung, and the WVV Wiesbaden Holding GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Wiesbaden, re-municipalised Thüga AG Munich; Thüga holds 49.38% of ESWE Versorgungs AG's share capital, while WVV Wiesbaden Holding GmbH holds 50.62%. Also in 2009 ESWE BioEnergie GmbH was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary, building and operating a biomass combined heat and power plant whose heat feeds into Wiesbaden's district heating network. In 2012 water supply was spun off to a new municipal enterprise of the state capital Wiesbaden (WLW). In April 2013 the company acquired its own wind farm in Uettingen (Lower Franconia). Its wind energy portfolio now includes ten wind farms, some held together with Thüga Erneuerbare Energien and KMW, representing around 42 MW of proportional capacity, supplemented by indirect stakes such as in the Heidenrod wind farm. In 2015 ESWE Versorgung celebrated its 85th anniversary. Since 2019 the "Wiesbaden Crowd" funding platform has supported local clubs and institutions, distributing nearly 200,000 euros. On 5 November 2020 ESWE Versorgung became a co-shareholder in "easierLife". The company remains a municipal utility majority-owned by the City of Wiesbaden, active in the energy transition through renewables, energy efficiency and climate protection initiatives.

History

The history of ESWE Versorgung begins with the municipal water and lighting works of Wiesbaden. On 30 April 1930 the Wiesbaden city parliament resolved to convert these municipal works into a stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft). The aim was to improve access to the loan market and to achieve greater flexibility and independence. In 1942, by incorporating the municipal transport operations, a communal "cross-association" (Querverbund) was formed, linking energy and transport under one municipal umbrella. For decades the company operated as Stadtwerke Wiesbaden. A 1970 advertising campaign to modernise the company's image introduced the phonetic spelling of the letters S and W as "Es" and "We", giving rise to the abbreviation ESWE, which remains the brand today. In 2000 the transport operations were spun off and converted into a GmbH, and the Stadtwerke were dissolved. In 2002 the ESWE Innovation and Climate Protection Fund was established, supporting private individuals and companies in sustainable measures such as solar storage batteries. In 2005 ESWE Versorgung handed over the Schierstein waterworks to Hessenwasser. In 2006 ESWE Netz GmbH was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary; since 2014 it has operated as Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz GmbH (sw netz). In 2009 the Gaswerksverband Rheingau AG was merged into ESWE Versorgung. In the same year, with the participation of WVV Wiesbaden Holding GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Wiesbaden, the re-municipalisation of Thüga AG Munich took place; Thüga holds 49.38% of ESWE Versorgungs AG's share capital, while WVV Wiesbaden Holding GmbH holds 50.62%. Also in 2009, ESWE BioEnergie GmbH was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary; it built and operates a biomass combined heat and power plant whose heat feeds into Wiesbaden's district heating network. In 2012 water supply was spun off and transferred to a new municipal enterprise of the state capital Wiesbaden (WLW). In April 2013 the company acquired its own wind farm in Uettingen (Lower Franconia). Its wind energy portfolio now includes ten wind farms, some held together with Thüga Erneuerbare Energien and KMW, representing around 42 MW of proportional capacity, supplemented by indirect stakes such as in the Heidenrod wind farm and companies with their own renewable energy portfolios. In 2015 ESWE Versorgung celebrated its 85th anniversary. Since 2019 the "Wiesbaden Crowd" funding platform has supported local clubs and institutions, distributing nearly 200,000 euros in funding. On 5 November 2020 ESWE Versorgung became a co-shareholder in "easierLife". The company continues to operate as a municipal energy utility majority-owned by the City of Wiesbaden, active in the energy transition.
