Overview

Etcetc is an independent record label based in Sydney, Australia, operating across alternative, electronic and dance music. The label developed out of Ministry of Sound Australia, where Andrew Jackson and Tim McGee established a dedicated trading identity in March 2007 for artist album projects. The business was incorporated as a company in August 2008 by Jackson, McGee and Richard Mergler, subsequently operating as an independent label rather than simply as a project within Ministry of Sound Australia. The label's early history was shaped by the founders' experience in artist-and-repertoire work, licensing and album marketing. Before Etcetc was created, Jackson had worked as A&R and Recordings Manager at Ministry of Sound Australia and had signed Mylo's album Destroy Rock & Roll. The label's initial Etcetc release was Digitalism's Idealism, issued through a partnership with Virgin Music. Early activity also included releases and licensing projects involving artists such as The Knife, WhoMadeWho and Jenny Wilson, giving the imprint a profile that extended beyond conventional commercial dance music. Etcetc expanded its artist roster through Australian and international signings. Early Australian projects included Melbourne band Mission Control and Sydney band Lost Valentinos. Lost Valentinos' work on Cities of Gold, produced in collaboration with Ewan Pearson, was supported by singles, remixes, European performances and coverage from international music media. Over time, the label became associated with a broad roster spanning electronic producers, alternative acts, pop-oriented dance artists and creative projects, including Pnau, George Maple, Kilter, Paces, San Mei, Luke Million, CLYPSO, Luboku, Set Mo, Poolclvb and others. It has also handled Australian and New Zealand releases for selected international artists, including Jax Jones, Fisher, Duke Dumont, Fever Ray and Digitalism. Since June 2013, the label has been led by Aden Mullens, a former Ministry of Sound A&R and compilations manager. Mullens became General Manager in October 2018 and has remained involved in signing artists, developing recording careers, coordinating marketing and guiding the label's broader creative direction. Under his tenure, Etcetc received multiple ARIA Music Awards nominations and won Best Dance Release in successive years for Pnau's Chameleon in 2017 and Go Bang in 2018. The company was also named Indie Label of the Year at The Music Network's Tinnie Awards in 2018. Etcetc has combined independent-label A&R with partnerships for distribution and international exploitation. Its distribution relationship moved from EMI Australia to Universal Music Australia in late 2007, and the label has been distributed by The Orchard since 2019. The company remains an active independent imprint whose catalogue and roster are centered on Australian electronic and alternative music, while selected licensing arrangements give it a presence in wider regional markets.

History

Etcetc originated within the Australian operations of Ministry of Sound. In March 2007, Andrew Jackson and Tim McGee created the Etcetc trading name as a dedicated vehicle for artist album projects. Jackson brought prior A&R experience from Ministry of Sound Australia, where he had signed Mylo's Destroy Rock & Roll and worked on a range of alternative and electronic licensing projects. The new imprint's first release was Digitalism's Idealism, issued through a partnership with Virgin Music. The label's distribution arrangements changed during its formative period. In December 2007, Ministry of Sound Australia and Etcetc moved their Australian distribution from EMI Australia to Universal Music Australia. In February 2008, Etcetc signed Melbourne band Mission Control and released the group's debut EP. The project gained attention from Australian youth broadcaster Triple J, which later selected Mission Control as a Next Crop artist for 2009. In October 2008, the label signed Sydney band Lost Valentinos and began promoting the group's album Cities of Gold. The record had been developed with producer Ewan Pearson, and its associated singles, remixes and performances attracted coverage from international music publications and radio. Etcetc was incorporated as an independent company in August 2008 by Andrew Jackson, Tim McGee and Richard Mergler. Its roster and catalogue subsequently broadened from album-oriented alternative music into electronic, dance and pop-adjacent releases. Artists associated with the label include Pnau, George Maple, Kilter, Paces, San Mei, Luke Million, CLYPSO, Luboku, Set Mo, Poolclvb, Airwolf Paradise, BRUX, Donatachi, Dual Manner, Palais and Sumner. The label has also released or distributed selected Australian and New Zealand material from international artists such as Jax Jones, Fisher, Duke Dumont, Fever Ray and Digitalism. Aden Mullens took charge of the label in June 2013 after working at Ministry of Sound as an A&R and compilations manager. His responsibilities included artist signings, repertoire selection, marketing and the development of artists' recording careers. In October 2018, he moved into the General Manager role. During this period, Etcetc achieved recognition from the Australian recording industry, accumulating ten ARIA Music Awards nominations across categories including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Independent Release and Best Video. The label won Best Dance Release in consecutive years with Pnau's Chameleon and Go Bang. In February 2018, The Music Network named Etcetc Indie Label of the Year at its Tinnie Awards. Mullens was also nominated for Label A&R of the Year and was identified as the only independent-label A&R nominee in that category. Since 2019, The Orchard has distributed Etcetc's releases. The label continues to operate as an independent Sydney-based music company focused on artist development, catalogue releases, licensing and regional distribution.
