Overview
Etihad Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates and one of the country’s two flag carriers, alongside Emirates. Headquartered in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, the airline uses Zayed International Airport as its principal hub and connects the emirate with destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Its name comes from the Arabic word for “union” or “unity,” reflecting the federation of the seven emirates. The airline was established in July 2003 by an Amiri decree issued on behalf of Abu Dhabi. It began flying in November of that year, initially serving Al Ain ceremonially and then launching commercial services to Beirut. Etihad was created as Abu Dhabi’s own international carrier after the emirate’s earlier participation in Gulf Air, and its development formed part of a broader strategy to expand Abu Dhabi’s global connectivity, tourism and aviation infrastructure. During its first decade, Etihad pursued rapid fleet and network expansion. It placed major Airbus and Boeing orders, introduced long-haul wide-body aircraft and built a premium-oriented identity around hospitality, distinctive cabin design and Abu Dhabi as a connecting hub. Its offer has included Economy, Business and First Class cabins, premium lounges, Etihad Cargo and holiday products. The airline became particularly associated with The Residence, a private multi-room cabin on selected Airbus A380 aircraft, as well as high-end First Class and Business Class services. From 2011 through the middle of the 2010s, Etihad developed an equity-alliance strategy by acquiring minority stakes in airlines including Air Berlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Jet Airways, Virgin Australia and Darwin Airline. It also helped establish Etihad Airways Partners in 2015. The strategy was intended to broaden Etihad’s network and provide commercial synergies, but several investee airlines later experienced severe financial difficulties. Air Berlin and Alitalia entered insolvency processes, Virgin Australia entered administration, and Etihad subsequently withdrew from or lost its investments. The resulting losses led to leadership changes, fleet revisions and a strategic shift away from minority airline ownership. The airline reported its first full-year net profit in 2011, but later recorded substantial losses, including losses associated with its investment strategy. The COVID-19 pandemic placed further pressure on aviation: passenger traffic fell sharply in 2020, many flights were suspended, and the company reduced its workforce. Etihad also reconsidered the long-term role of its Airbus A380 fleet and emphasized smaller, more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. Etihad began a recovery and restructuring phase after the pandemic. It reported improved profitability in 2022 as travel demand returned, and it restored selected A380 services, including flights from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow and later other major cities. In October 2022, ownership of Etihad was transferred to Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund ADQ, aligning it with other Abu Dhabi aviation and travel assets. The airline continues to operate passenger and cargo services and remains an important instrument of Abu Dhabi’s international connectivity and economic strategy.
History
Abu Dhabi was formerly a joint owner of Gulf Air with Bahrain, Qatar and Oman. As the emirate developed its own aviation and economic strategy, an Amiri decree in July 2003 established Etihad Airways as the UAE’s national airline. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan was associated with the airline’s foundation, which was backed by AED500 million in start-up capital. A ceremonial flight to Al Ain took place on 5 November 2003, followed by the first commercial service to Beirut on 12 November. Etihad expanded quickly. In 2004 it announced a large aircraft order covering Boeing 777s and Airbus aircraft, including the Airbus A380. At the 2008 Farnborough Airshow it announced further Boeing 787 and 777 commitments. The carrier’s first full-year net profit was reported in 2011, consistent with a growth strategy led by James Hogan, who became chief executive in 2006. The central strategic experiment of the 2010s was an equity alliance. Etihad bought minority stakes in Air Berlin, Air Seychelles, Aer Lingus, Virgin Australia, Air Serbia, Jet Airways, Darwin Airline and Alitalia. Air Serbia was created after Etihad acquired 49% of Jat Airways in 2013. Darwin was rebranded as Etihad Regional, while the Alitalia transaction gave Etihad a 49% holding in the Italian flag carrier. Etihad Airways Partners, established in 2015, sought to combine affiliated carriers under a common commercial framework. The strategy ultimately exposed Etihad to the financial problems of several partner airlines. Alitalia entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2017, Air Berlin filed for insolvency after Etihad withdrew support, and other holdings were reduced or exited. Etihad reported a loss of about US$1.873 billion for 2016 and a further loss of about US$1.52 billion for 2017. Hogan and Rigney left during the 2017 restructuring period, and Ray Gammell served temporarily while a permanent leadership transition was arranged. The airline subsequently reduced aircraft commitments and moved toward a simpler, more self-contained network and fleet strategy. The pandemic created a second major disruption. Most passenger operations were grounded between March and June 2020, passenger numbers fell substantially, and more than 1,000 cabin crew and pilots were reportedly laid off. Etihad examined whether its A380s would return to passenger service and increasingly emphasized efficient twin-engine aircraft. In February 2021 it said that all operating pilots and cabin crew had been vaccinated against COVID-19. Recovery began as international travel resumed, with a reported first-half profit in 2022. In October 2022 Etihad was transferred to ADQ, bringing it into common ownership with other Abu Dhabi aviation and travel interests. The airline then restored selected Airbus A380 operations, beginning with London Heathrow and later adding other major destinations. Etihad remains an active long-haul carrier whose business includes passenger transport, cargo and holiday services, with Abu Dhabi as its principal hub.
